Gears of War 6 is in limbo, we have not received any concrete news regarding the new video game in the saga. The Coalition seems to be working on a title with relevant graphic prowess and, although we don’t know anything, we can predict that it will be a great video game that will finish the main story of Gears of War.
Given this, several questions arise, but one that fans of the franchise have always had concerns the Carmine family and their outcome as characters in the narrative of these games. The Carmine brothers have been almost mistreated characters by the developers, as they function as a tragic or comic incentive to mark important moments that affect the protagonists. But despite this, they have won the affection of the entire community, which invites us to investigate their history and find out where they came from and where they are currently.
The Carmine family, 4 brothers with a tragic destiny
To know in depth everything about the Carmine family, we have to go back to the Gears of War comics, because there they give us a little detail about the characters. That being said, in this article we’re going to talk a little about what we know about each of the members of the Carmine family based on their appearances in the games or comics, their appearances in the franchise, and what we expect to see next. Gears 6. .
Fredo Carmine – Gears of War: Judgment: Kilo Squad: The Survivor’s Journal
In a guide referenced in Gears of War: Judgment, reference is made to a journalist named Fredo Carmine. Apparently it was a reporter from a Halvo Bay newspaper who interviewed Ezra Loomis about the events of E-Day. Rob Auten, one of the writers of the first Gears of War, talked a little about this character, trying to be very concise. so as not to give too much information, he clarified that Fredo was a journalist and, possibly, a cousin of the Carmine brothers Anthony Benjamin and Clayton.
Anthony Carmine – Gears of War
The first Carmine to appear in a video game was Anthony Carmine. His appearance and history are more important than it seems, because thanks to him the “golden rule of Gears” mentioned in Gears of War 2 is understood. This rule is hide or die, which Anthony does not obey and ends up dying in the world. House of Sovereigns by a sniper. This death was the first of a flagship Gear within the franchise, marking the cruelty of the writers towards these brothers.
Anthony was the younger brother, demonstrating his lack of combat experience. He had a small appearance in Gears of War 3 in Marcus’ Nightmare in the game’s prologue and mentioned in Gears 5 in Tomb of the Giant Worm.
Benjamin Carmine – Gears of War 2
Benjamin Carmine, like Anthony, joined Delta Squad alongside Marcus and Dom at the start of the campaign. During his time with the team, we learned several details about his life and that of his brothers. Of the three brothers, he may have had the most screen time in a single game, accompanying us through the campaign almost halfway, dying inside the giant worm. Finding him dying, he evokes his brothers. Additionally, some time later, Dom brings up the obsession Benjamin seemed to have with flamethrowers.
Benjamin was the youngest brother and is perhaps the most appreciated by the community for the empathy that his entire journey generated within the Gears of War 2 campaign. Thanks to him, we discovered the existence of the 4 brothers , because he mentions them in an isolated dialogue. also reveals Clayton’s name in a letter that Marcus recovers from his body after losing his life.
Out of curiosity, Benjamin was always seen fighting with a sniper. He used this weapon to commemorate his brother Anthony, who died following a sniper shot. He also had a second appearance in Marcus’ Nightmare in Gears of War 3 and was mentioned on different occasions in other episodes.
Clayton Carmine – Gears of War 3
Older brother Carmine was the only one not directly part of Delta Squad, his role being to accompany Baird and Cole during the Gears of War 3 campaign. He made his first appearance in that game in the game’s second mission. here, demonstrating. his clear difference from his two brothers. Stronger, braver and more aggressive, Clayton was the only survivor of the Carmine family to appear as a playable character in the franchise.
Clayton, like Benjamin, participated in Operation Hollow Storm, but he did not know where his brother was at the time. His participation in the war was very active, but not leadership. He was among those who helped Marcus at the end of the Gears of War 3 campaign in a scene where it looked like he died, but ultimately he didn’t. He returned in Gears 5 as a veteran still servingbut this appearance was limited to a few dialogues and not much else.
Some important details about this character are that he has a tattoo that Bernie gave him at the end of the second installment in which he attempts to memorialize his two brothers. Additionally, and for future episodes, this could be key to discovering the whereabouts of his other brother, since he has a relationship with the Outsiders and members of the Coalition.
Clayton Carmine is not dead thanks to the community, because in a dynamic led by Epic Games at the time, it invited players to decide the future of the character. They did this via Xbox avatars and two different shirts. There were 2 t-shirts that said “Carmine Must Die” or “Save Carmine”. The community saved Carmine and that’s why he hasn’t died to this day.
Gary Carmine – Gears of War 4
Gary Carmine is the only family member to appear in the games with an uncertain fate, as it is unknown whether he died or not. His only appearance is during the DeeBees’ attack on the aliens’ camp. In this mission, from the beginning, It looks like one of the deployed pods fell right on top of him, so it appears he’s dead.
Theories about his condition are uncertain, but it is very likely that he is dead, as during a series of skins that the Coalition released in multiplayer, they generated a skin of the dead Carmines, removing Gary’s, blurting out that he died fighting.
Not much else is known about Gary Carmine, he has no further appearances in other video games beyond being a playable character in Gears 5’s multiplayer. Apparently he is the cousin of the 4 brothers, so the rumors are always in the air.
Elizabeth Carmine – Gears 5
The first female member of the Carmine family to appear in a video game was Elizabeth Carmine, referred to as Lizzie, she had a short appearance in the campaign as she died in one of the game’s early missions. Elizabeth could be considered a tough and quite aggressive woman, with a rather military profile. Her driving ability allowed her to lead the convoy of Minotaurs, in which she later died due to the Hammer of Dawn..
In one of the dialogues, she suggests that she is Clayton’s niece, so we understand that she is the daughter of this mysterious brother who has never been referenced in any game, since neither Anthony nor Benjamin had children.
Will Carmine – Gears of War: The Rise of RAAM (comic)
The only Carmine to ever show his face was introduced to us in a 2018 comic called The Rise of RAAM. In this comic focused on everything RAAM did leading up to E-Day, we were introduced to another member of the Carmine family, but without context to help us recognize his role in that family.
Will Carmine, in addition to showing his face, is a veteran fighter who participated in the war against the URI, he therefore cannot be related as a Carmine brother because Benjamin does not mention him at any time. Neither does Anthony, who seems to admire Marcus for fighting this war.
His appearance is also brief, as he is killed by RAAM in one of his first appearances as an antagonist, demonstrating his power.
This is all we know about this character, related to the Carmines by his last name, but with no other apparent relationship. He had no children, so he is not the father of Elizabeth or Gary.
