During the recent GDC held in San Francisco, Microsoft indirectly confirmed that the Xbox Series X would not be its last console. At the event, Microsoft presented an exhibit tracing the evolution of Xbox consoles, from the first Xbox through to 2020’s Xbox Series X, followed by a mysterious hardware unit with a question mark on it.
This booth suggests that Microsoft is working on a new console, which has sparked a sea of speculation about its name and possible features. Some have suggested that it might be the Xbox Keystone, a cloud gaming device that Microsoft was developing before high costs caused it to cancel the project. However, the project has been restarted, so it cannot be ruled out that it will appear at some point in the future.
The new Xbox on the way
Other possibilities include an upgraded version of Xbox Series X, similar to what Xbox One X was for Xbox One, or even a “slim” model. Either way, it seems unlikely to be a brand new console in a generation that still has a lot to offer and we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg.
At the moment we do not have an official announcement to use, but on different occasions the company has confirmed that the Xbox Series will not be the last model. Also, the “Series” tag leaves the doors open for new models or revisions in the future.
