Gamescom is the biggest video game fair in Europe. Held in Cologne, Germany, it has room for thousands of people to try out and play games. Unlike what was the extinct E3, Gamescom focuses on giving users the ability to test games in development; of course, there is also room for new announcements.
It is true that the fair has been in the doldrums for years. Don’t get me wrong, going there is a delight, my partner Adrián escapes as soon as he can, but there are still times when there have been strong announcements that lifted the audience.
Xbox has not confirmed attendance, you have to wait…
This year doesn’t seem to be going much better, there are already several publishers that have dropped, the most recent being Sony, which was perhaps one of the biggest contributors to the fair. It would be the second year in a row that he was not there. What is strange is that as of the dates we are still at, there are not many companies that have confirmed their assistance.
At the moment, we only have two fixed industry players, Nintendo and Team 17, who confirmed their presence just a few days ago. As of today there is no official list indicating which publishers or developers will be there. Not even temporary. Of course, it feels strange that there is still so little information.
Xbox has not confirmed its existence either, although in recent years it has almost been a testimony, it could be a good time to start betting on the fair again as they did in 2015 porting their games three stars of that year. I remember they even showed a demo of the Crackdown 3 physics exclusively for the event. There was also Quantum Break. Maybe after Xbox Games Showcase 2023 they’ll confirm something, which they haven’t done yet so it doesn’t overshadow their own event makes sense.
This year’s Gamescom kicks off with “Gamescom Opening Night Live” on August 22, with the rest of the day running from August 23-27.
