Xbox boss – Phil Spencer – has emailed Microsoft employees and said the recent layoffs are hurting them.
As we previously reported, after hiring 40,000 new employees in 2021, Microsoft laid off 10,000 employees. There were also cuts at 343 Industries, Zenimax/Bethesda and The Coalition. 343 Industries appeared to be the hardest hit, but sent out a strong message that they will continue to develop Halo.
In an email sent by my city was published, Phil Spencer addressed his employees with the following words:
“This has been a difficult week at Microsoft and here on our teams. Now that many of the 1:1 and team meetings have taken place, I want to take a moment to reiterate the message you heard from your leaders.”
“This is a difficult moment at our company and this week’s actions have been painful decisions. The Gaming Leadership Team had to make decisions that we believed would ensure the long-term success of our products and our company, but the individual outcomes of those decisions are real. I know this hurts. Thank you for supporting our colleagues in managing these changes.”
“Over the coming weeks we will have many opportunities to connect with you and answer your questions, including next week’s monthly game update for the teams attending this meetup, and I’m in close contact with the teams at ZeniMax , to support them. GLT and I strive to be as transparent as possible. It is a challenge to remain in the dark, but I am confident that together we will get through this difficult moment.”

Your work is greatly appreciated in these times of change and is an integral part of our business dynamic. I’m confident in our future and proud to be part of this team, but I also recognize that this is a challenging time and I want to thank you for everything you are doing here.”
