Microsoft’s strategy of launching Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on Game Pass on day one appears to have paid off. Even though some analysts predicted a drop in sales of the game, particularly on Xbox, the company is satisfied with the initial commercial performance. In fact, sales on PlayStation and PC were 60% higher compared to Modern Warfare 3’s release in 2023.
Game Pass’s growth has stalled in recent years and the launch of Black Ops 6 was seen as a key moment for the platform. Although Microsoft has not revealed how many new subscribers the game has broughtCEO Satya Nadella confirmed that the service set a record for new subscribers on its debut day.
Now the challenge is to keep these players
Miles Leslie, Associate Creative Director at Treyarch, who has worked on Call of Duty for 16 years, commented in an interview with the BBC that the release of Black Ops 6 on Game Pass helped convince hesitant players to try the game. “What we saw was that it allowed people who might have been hesitant, who might have -maybe some resistance, who maybe thought: ‘I haven’t played in a while’, to come back and give the title a chance,” he explains.
Black Ops 6 Season 1 begins on November 14, 2024and details of what to expect have already been announced. Additionally, in 2025, there will be another Call of Duty game to contend with, which would be a sequel to Black Ops 2. Now, the company must strive to keep players engaged with the game and the platform . Black Ops 6 Season 1 will be key in determining whether Microsoft’s strategy has been a long-term success.
