In the next year Microsoft could realize its plans and launch an Xbox Mobile Store.
Microsoft is not only planning to take over Activision Blizzard to expand its Xbox Game Pass offering. The industry giant also wants to expand its presence in the mobile sector, as has recently become known.
Implementation of those plans could take shape next year with the launch of the matching Xbox Mobile Store.
Phil Spencer, head of gaming at Microsoft, told the Financial Times they are preparing to roll out a mobile store for apps on Android and iOS devices when legislation allows.
The upcoming law, the Digital Markets Act, should probably help the new Xbox Mobile Store. Phil Spencer sees this as a huge opportunity, he says. Under the new law, Google and Apple can no longer force their users to limit access to their apps only through the company’s respective stores.
Spencer said, “We want to be able to offer Xbox and content from us and our third parties on any screen that someone wants to play on.”
“Today we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to work towards a world that we believe is coming, where those devices are opened up.”
The earliest the Xbox Mobile Store could launch is March 6, 2024, unless the law is appealed.
