Despite the purchase of studios and franchises, the truth is that Xbox Game Studios continues to burden the same problem as always, frequency and release dates. Not many of us think it’s a shot in the foot to leave the first 6 months of the year without going out and then focus everything on the last 4 months.
Since Redmond, they have committed several times that they would bet more to space out the games more throughout the year, a promise that fell on deaf ears… I insist, several times.
Launch Focus is Xbox’s Achilles heel, and for that reason they’re going to improve it
Maybe now that they have more plans than ever they are able to deliver on that promise, it is true that some time has to be allowed until the new toys Microsoft buys start to finish projects. However, I insist, this planning error it’s been years and it’s a very negative strategy for the Xbox audience.
Now that Xbox Game Pass exists, there is no reason to wait until the end of the year, reaching a large audience is now relatively easy for Microsoft games, so it makes sense that they stop using the strategy of 4 months. And in fact, Phil Spencer seems committed to it, or so he replied when asked about it in the xbox era podcast.
We’ve got a lot of great games in development… We want to get to that point where there’s a steady stream of great games coming, that our customers can predict… We’re going through this moment, you know, we don’t have big game this quarter, so with Matt Booty and the rest of the team, we want to get to that point where we really have a great on-ramp for our platform and games that can get people excited on a regular basis.
Now is the time to see how they react in 2023, the first quarter of 2022 is already airing, and I wouldn’t expect a surprise release until summer. So we can once again break the promise this year. I would like nothing more than a better dosage in the Xbox versions, hardware they have for the future.
