Do you already have one or the other title in mind? With this list of the top 10 games of 2023, we’ll help you get started. And if you’re in the mood for action right away, check out our video about it:
#10 – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
For a long time, Electronic Arts had rested on the Star Wars license, which it had bought for a lot of money. Exciting projects like Star Wars 1313 were discontinued, and with brazen microtransactions like Star Wars Battlefront 2, fans were even finally turned against themselves.
Then came Cal Kestis. The young Jedi showed us in Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order that EA can deal with the brand differently. An accessible mix of Metroidvania and Soulslike, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was well received by fans and critics alike.
In 2023, Cal is rewarded with facing a new threat in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. With refined gameplay, new companions and fresh gadgets, the sequel wants to inspire you just as much as its predecessor. May the force be with the developers.
#9 – Atomic Heart
You are fans of BioShock and want to bridge the waiting time until Ken Levine’s new project Judas? Then arm yourself for Atomic Heart. But the new shooter from Mundfish is more than just a stopgap.
The title releases you into an alternative reality in which the Soviet Union was able to set up a machine empire through technical advances, which is now turning against its creators. Similar to the BioShock parts, this is a utopian world with retro chic that is slowly collapsing.
In addition to a fascinating open world, Atomic Heart offers action-packed gameplay. In addition to classic weapons, skills such as telekinesis or throwing lightning are part of your arsenal. If all goes according to plan, you’ll be able to dive into the alternate Soviet Union on February 21, 2023.
#8 – STALKER 2
What have we waited for this moment! As a fan of the legendary shooter exploration in Chernobyl, we have been looking forward to a second part for years, which should also land on the Xbox if possible.
Then the setbacks: Kickstarter, announcements, scrapping – until the big surprise followed at the Xbox Games Showcase. STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl will be the long-awaited sequel – and the first STALKER on a console.
But that’s not all: STALKER 2 will also be released exclusively for the Xbox and PC – and will appear in Game Pass from day 1. If that’s not a reason to venture into Chernobyl’s contaminated restricted area, then we don’t know what is.
#7 – Dead Island 2
If a game from this list has an eventful development history behind it, it must be the sequel to one of the legendary zombie games in console history: Dead Isl and 2.
Dead Island 2 has been in development for a full ten years, while three different studios have been working on the survival shooter. On April 28, 2023, the zombie hordes are finally set to return.
Contrary to what the name suggests, this time the apocalypse does not take place on an island, but in Los Angeles. In addition to innovations such as a revised combat system, familiar elements such as the crafting and rage mode are also being introduced.
#6 – Hogwarts Legacy
Admittedly, Harry Potter hasn’t always had it easy thanks to the statements of his creator in recent years. And the spin-off films of the Fantastic Beasts, despite solid successes at the box office, did not do well everywhere. However, that doesn’t lessen our interest in finally returning to Hogwarts in a true single-player RPG.
At the beginning of the 19th century, you take on the role of a self-created sorcerer’s apprentice, are allowed to freely visit Hogwarts, cast all kinds of spells and defy dangers and mysteries. And if anyone has experience with open world sandboxes, it’s Avalanche Studios. In our return to Hogwarts test, the sorcerer’s apprentices already cut a really good figure.
#5 – Redfall
Vampires hate sunlight! But what if they just block out the sun? You have to pay for this worst case in Arkane’s latest project Redfall.
The title of the creators of Dishonored puts you in the small town of the same name occupied by bloodsuckers. In a stylized open world you face the vampires either solo or with up to three friends.
In addition to great shooter gameplay, there are also exciting characters with different abilities that are typical of Arkane. With high-end weapons, telekinesis or a robot army, the liberation of Redfall can begin in May 2023.
NO. 4 – Forza Motorsport
Requels are currently not only in fashion in the film landscape, they also exist in gaming. For example in our favorite racing series: Forza Motorsport. Actually now the official part eight of the series, the title, which will be released in 2023, will not miss a year.
The message behind it is clear: we go back to the roots, but we don’t want to overwhelm newcomers with a large number in the title. On the other hand, the graphic splendor and the wealth of detail in the racing title will be overwhelming.
Dynamic times of day, realistic vehicle damage, real-time ray tracing, new (Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit) and familiar tracks (Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps) are just some of the things Forza Motorsport 2023 has in store for you.
After playing arcade games with Forza Horizon 5, we can’t wait to fight for every tenth of a second again on circuits around the world.
#3 – Diablo 4
It all started with an April Fool’s joke – at least with a felt one. Because instead of announcing Diablo 4 at Blizzcon 2018, Blizzard threw a mobile game in front of its fans: Diablo Immortal.
Since then, the elephant of a fourth part of the iconic Hack-n-Slay series has been in the air – and the fans’ wish for a sequel will finally be fulfilled in 2023. Diablo 4 will not only offer an open world, but also a shared world.
In addition, the Necromancer, loved by many fans, is finally represented as a class right from the start. Despite the retained iso perspective, the verticality of the world will play a major role. It remains to be seen if Blizzard will monetize Diablo 4 as hard as Immortal, or if they reserve whale squeezing for mobile.
#2 – Alan Wake2
Alan, wake up! Remedy’s Xbox trip to Bright Falls is arguably one of the cult games of the Xbox 360 era. Following the eponymous author with writer’s block, we find ourselves in the middle of a mysterious shadowy world that is heavily inspired by Stephen King’s novels and their film adaptations.
In 2023, Alan Wake 2, a successor, will take the stage. No longer exclusive and now distributed by Epic Games, but as mysterious as the original. Unlike its action-oriented predecessor, however, Alan Wake 2 is intended to be a survival horror game.
A treat for fans: actor Ilkka Villi will once again be the godfather for Alan Wake’s appearance. Anyone who hasn’t played the remaster of the first part or the spin-off American Nightmare should still be able to enjoy Alan Wake 2.
#1 – Starfield
The hype is always programmed with new Bethesda games, but with Starfield it reaches new dimensions. After all, the role-playing experts not only venture into space, but also want to expand their narrative sandbox to more than 1,000 planets.
As the most ambitious and largest project in the company’s history, Starfield is preparing to become a mix of Skyrim, Elite Dangerous and No Man’s Sky. Including base building, crafting, space flight, ship customization and and and …
Unfortunately, Starfield was postponed to 2023 last year. But if Bethesda games like Fallout 76 have taught us anything, it’s that developers are welcome to take a little more time. After all, No Man’s Sky is a cautionary tale.
