As soon as we started the month of January, we already had the first news, in my opinion bombshell, to start the year. And has Microsoft registered Xbox Series XS. Little is known about it, but there are already voices deciding that this is just a registration to protect the name and not a new machine as such. A very hasty declaration in my opinion.
In fact, in this article I want to go over the reasons why I think we are indeed dealing with new material (stick with this concept) and not popular name protection. I will break it down into 3 blocks. You stay with me? Keep reading.
Xbox: size nomenclature
The first reason is perhaps the least solid, but it seems very logical to me. All Xbox One’s accept models by size; X being the largest and most powerful size, and S the smallest and least powerful size. This concept is easy to understand for almost all clothing consumers.
If the clues we see these years on Microsoft consoles are going in the right direction, We would be facing an Xbox less powerful than the S Series; although we’ll talk about that later. The point is that depending on the clothing sizes, the size before the S is neither more nor less than XS. Nothing more. And it is a more or less universal language.
Microsoft did not register a name
This point is the one that generates the least friction for me. If we go to the registry, Microsoft didn’t register a name or trademark, it registered “products and services” applied to something material. The Xbox Series XS is therefore either a good or a service. Not a nomenclature to protect a familiar name or term.
You will understand this better with real examples. If we look at the “Power Your Dreams” record, this slogan has been registered in ranking 100, 101, 107, which is a record of goods and services only in software for use in programs, games or names on web pages.
The concept is clear, right? Now let’s take a close look at what Microsoft has done with the XS series. Registered directly under US class 021, 023, 026, 036, 038; a registry that you can apply to goods and services associated with games, software, consoles, or other hardware for playing. A classification that has nothing to do with the registration of a trademark or a slogan as we have seen above.
Do you still have doubts? Well, look at the American class Microsoft uses to register the Xbox Series or the Xbox Series S or X. Exactly! the same as for the Xbox Series XS. So that you can see it better:
last name | Type | US Class |
Fuel your dreams | Slogan / Brand | 100, 101, 107 |
Grounded | Game / Brand | 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 |
The fight is in the United States | Slogan / Brand | 100, 101, 107 |
Xbox Series | Consoles | 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 |
Xbox Series S | Consoles | 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 |
Xbox Series X | Consoles | 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 |
Xbox Series XS | ??? | 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 |
The nomenclature 021, 023, 026, 036, 038 also applies to logos associated with a tangible good such as games or consoles. If Microsoft had wanted to protect the terminology “X | S” the normal thing would have been to register a trademark or a slogan, the “Power Your Dreams” example is perfect to understand.
The Edinburgh Project
Finally, we can’t forget that the Xbox Series SDK is hiding in a piece of hardware called Project Edinburgh. Very little is known about this machine, but it’s clear that if the development kit includes it, it’s because it is or was in the company’s plans.
What has long been speculated is that Americans are working a very inexpensive console designed to run under Project xCloud. Equipment dedicated to this purpose and very affordable for almost everyone. Come on, something like what Stadia offers. Now look at the example I put in sizes, an XS fits a lower console than the Xbox Series S because it would be less powerful and surely smaller not requiring so much SoC.
Obviously, none of the above is officially confirmed, everything you read is an article based on different findings and data that I investigated. Microsoft could well have registered that name and then given way to a completely different name. I think I remember he did something similar with Project Scorpio.
Finally remember that we are talking about a gigantic company that usually patents names, brands and more on a daily basis. Because of this, we may not see a translation in the short term, or it may be left blank and forgotten like other records.
