At Xbox, we put the player at the heart of everything we do, and that includes our trust and security practices. With more than 3 billion players around the world, vibrant online communities grow and develop every day, and it is our job to foster spaces that are safe, positive, inclusive and welcoming for all players, from the novice gamer to the more experienced Competitor.
Today we’re releasing our very first Xbox Transparency Report, which provides clear numbers and explanations behind our work to protect our players and moderate content on the platform. We commit to publishing a report every six months detailing our progress. In Microsoft’s last Digital Civility Index, it was found that 9 out of 10 respondents identified a need for more education on how to make the digital world safer – and as we all know, gaming is one of the biggest digital environments. The release of this report is part of our long-standing commitment to keeping online safe, engaging with the evidence, and working to help people understand how to play a positive role in the Xbox community. This report complements the ongoing review of our community standards, making it easier for all players to understand what is and is not acceptable behavior; continuous investment in moderation tools; and ongoing partnership with industry bodies, regulators and the community.
We know Xbox is a special place for all of you. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to experience the joy of gaming, free from fear and intimidation and within the limits you set. Over the past few years, we’ve invested in features and capabilities that help make the gaming experience safer, such as: B. the Xbox Family Settings app, which offers parents and carers a convenient way to manage their children’s experience on Xbox, and we’ve acquired Community Management Leaders, two hat, which brings its Community Sift technology and dedicated language and culture special ists to our security portfolio. But we also recognize that negative activity can and has taken place. We do not condone behavior or content that violates our Community Standards. It’s important for us to take a moment to stop and reflect on where we are on this journey and share that with you. We will keep learning, improving and investing to give you the best experience while playing.
Among the key findings of the report:
- We take action to provide better experiences. The Xbox team performed more than 4.33 million proactive enforcements against inauthentic accounts, accounting for 57% of total enforcements during the reporting period. Inauthentic accounts are typically automated or bot-created accounts that create an unlevel playing field and can detract from a positive player experience. Our proactive moderation, up 9x compared to the same period last year, allows us to identify negative content and behavior before it reaches players. We continue to invest and improve our technology to ensure players have safe, positive, and welcoming experiences.
- Players are stewards of the community. Player reporting is a critical component of our security approach. In addition to our increased proactive security measures, investments in scanning and filtering technologies and training from the Xbox Ambassador Community, reporting helps us improve our work to better protect our players. Our players provided over 33 million reports during this period, with communication (46%) and behavior (43%) accounting for the majority of player concerns. Content moderation agents are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to ensure that content and behavior on our platform meets our community standards.
- The players are in control. Every player is different and preferences in terms of content and experience are not uniform. We offer players many customization options the settingsout message filter to child lock, at any point in your Xbox experience. These settings allow gamers to manage the type of content they see and experience across all the ways they play, whether it’s PC, console, or anywhere with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta). It’s up to you, the players, friends and family, to take control and make the settings that are right for you.
how can you help The Xbox community is only as strong as its community members, and the feedback and reports you provide help us continue to improve by introducing new features, settings, and opportunities that help us grow the platform shape. We want you to feel safe that we are listening and acting on your comments, so please share your feedback with us on the Xbox Insider Program or on the Xbox support site. Together we are able to shape a space where we can uphold our community standards and create spaces where everyone can have fun.
