Backward compatibility on Microsoft consoles is a topic of interest to Xbox fans. Recently, a new chapter in this story was discovered, which could be of great interest to those who still enjoy playing classic games on their modern consoles.
The story begins with the XeFu (Xenon Fusion) emulator, which allowed Xbox 360 gamers to enjoy games from the original Xbox. This emulator was released in 2005 and was updated several times until 2007, allowing many to enjoy about half of the original Xbox catalog on the 360. However, the operation of the emulator was not as smooth. simple as it seemed. There were multiple versions compiled specifically for certain games, which meant that the console had a list of compatible games. If the game was on the list, the console loaded the compatible version of the emulator
Microsoft recently updated its internal emulator
Those who owned an “unlocked” Xbox 360 could change the list of supported games and have the console use the game’s specific emulator, even if it wasn’t listed. However, this system had a problem: because there were multiple versions of the emulator, an unsupported game could work poorly with the latest version of the emulator, but work fine with an older version.
Recently, an exploit was discovered on Xbox One allowing games on the console to be decrypted. When analyzing the decrypted games, it was discovered that some original Xbox games did not use the Xbox One emulator, but they used an updated XeFu emulator. This updated version of XeFu worked on Xbox One 360 emulator. So far, 4 new versions of XeFu emulator have been found, dated between 2019 and 2021.
Latest versions of the Xenon Fusion emulator have improved some games
The most recent version of the emulator is xefu2021c, which dates back to November 30, 2021, already close to the impending death of backwards compatibility. The latest games added to this emulator’s compatibility are Secret weapons on Normandy and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath.
These new versions of the XeFu emulator not only allow you to play games that were previously unsupported, but also improve the gaming experience of other titles. For example, TimeSplitters 2, which previously did not work with official 360 controllers, now works correctly. Prince of Persia: The Two Crowns no longer has stuttering, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 can now be played at 720p or even 1080p, instead of the original 480p.
