A week ago we published an article where we talked about the good things that Tesla has as a brand, why buying a Tesla now was not a bad option. However, obviously not everything is positive, and in this article we will talk about the opposite, about the reasons that still make many people cringe when looking at a car from the company headed by Elon Musk.
Quality of finishes
One of the Internet memes related to Tesla is that its quality of finish and workmanship is very poor. The reality is that this meme is partly true and partly exaggerated.
After a month of using a Model Y, I have to say that inside I haven’t seen any kind of breakdown, the materials are good and the construction is solid. The soundproofing is more than adequate and the car is comfortable.
On the outside, however, you can see some parts that could have been put together better. I mean the placement of the panels, the thickness of the joints…
It is a visual and aesthetic failure, but which is sometimes present. It does not happen in all cars, but it is that considering what they cost, it should not happen in any.
minimalist interior
I’ve loved minimalism ever since I started studying architecture. That’s why I love the interior design line of these cars.
However, this is something that offends a lot of people, who want a more classic design, physical buttons to perform actions, etc.
The only thing I miss is being able to control the air conditioning without touching the screen, with buttons, although at least I can do it by voice.
there is only one screen
Although not all Tesla cars have a single screen, the reality is that 97% of their sales lack a second screen.
The Model and Model 3 have a huge central screen where you can see all the information about the car, both driving and entertainment.
There are people who prefer to have the data at the wheel or on a head-up display. I don’t care because the Citroen C4 I had had the center screens too, but that’s something that will throw many buyers off these cars.
Online shop
Buying a Tesla is always done online. Some of you will say “But there are dealers”. Yes, but the people working there are only there to help and advise you, they are not going to give you discounts or sign anything there when you book the car.
You can make the reservation from your home or from the dealer’s computer, but it’s also something online.
Most brands are studying or even setting up online purchasing systems, bypassing dealerships, in order to have more control over the final price of their vehicles, but today it is still normal to go in several dealerships to see who offers you the best price. .
No Android Auto or Apple CarPlay
One of the things I like the most about the Dacia Spring is its compatibility with Android Auto. This is something I miss in the Y model.
It’s true that Tesla’s interface is one of the best in the business, if not the best, but without an app store, functionality is limited to what Tesla wants.
Exterior design
On the YouTube channel I started a few weeks ago, someone told me that they ruled out the Tesla because of its aesthetics. Too simple and unchanged.
It seems very beautiful and timeless to me, but it is true that the brand has been using the same design line for almost 0 years.
The change in the Model 3 is coming, but it still doesn’t compare to what other brands are doing, which change their design language every few years.
Highly variable price drop
Buying a car at one price and seeing that two weeks later it costs less is something nobody likes. I say this from experience. Is that enough to keep you away from a brand? For some yes.
It’s always good to wait for a promotion that saves money on price, financing, etc., but clearly buying a Tesla at a price doesn’t guarantee it won’t drop sooner than expected.
Without 360º camera
Tesla cameras are very good, but they have some flaws. For starters, we don’t have a 360 degree camera. This aerial vision is very useful for parking, and Tesla, for some reason, does not give it away. It’s probably because there’s no camera on the front bumper.
In addition, the interior camera does not allow it to be easily viewed, although it allows us to use it to check the car with sentry mode or make video calls.
It has no speed cameras
Tesla a few months ago removed the radars on its less expensive cars. For self-driving it’s an aggravation, and there are cars that cost less than half, like the Dacia Spring itself, that have it.
Has no parking sensors
But it’s still the removal of parking sensors, which have been replaced by Tesla Vision, a system that only uses cameras. It’s not as good or accurate as I predict, and Tesla’s rivals have an advantage here.
It has no speed limiter
Tesla has a function to limit the maximum speed of the car from the application. So why am I saying it doesn’t have a speed limiter?
Because what this car doesn’t have is something like what my Citroën C4 had, which allowed, while you were driving, to set the maximum speed at which you were driving, and it didn’t product even if you speed up a bit. In this way it is possible to go no faster than necessary in the cities, avoiding fines.
Come on, it’s that even the Dacia Spring has it, even if it doesn’t have cruise control.
Panoramic ceiling
The final reason to rule out a Tesla, especially in hot climates, is that the panoramic roof is hot. But this happens in all cars with this roof. The problem is that we can’t cover it because Tesla doesn’t have a motorized blind system like other brands.
As you can see, there are still a lot of things that Tesla needs to improve to try to convince a portion of the population to buy their cars. Do I regret buying the Model Y? Not at all, but that does not prevent me from seeing the disadvantages of cars of this brand.
