It’s hard to do justice to the shock of this game’s release on the Nintendo 64. Now we’re going to see many of its innovations firsthand, with a re-release suitable for modern hardware.

GoldenEye returns as always

GoldenEye 007 was the title that proved first-person shooters could be designed for a console from scratch, instead of just going for the PC as was done back then.

This significated adapt the controller to a controller instead of relying on the intuitive scheme of a keyboard and mouse, but also solving a myriad of technical limitations due to the low power of the Nintendo console compared to a computer with a 3D graphics accelerator.

Although it was by no means a perfect game, it served to open many people’s eyes; And it also generated countless hours of fun, thanks in large part to one of its great innovations: a split-screen multiplayer mode that took advantage of the Nintendo 64’s four controller ports to create unforgettable matches. Also, as the name suggests, GoldenEye 007 was an adaptation of a film, and at the time it was synonymous with the game to be avoided. The developers, Rare, have managed to create a title that is faithful to the original story while keeping the most important thing in mind, fun.

Now, and more than 25 years after the initial launch, GoldenEye 007 returns to our screens. Luckily, it doesn’t do so with a remake or with a new game of the same name (something they’ve already tried without success), but with a faithful adaptation of the original game for Switch and Xbox; in the latter case, it will be available as part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription.

The videos and pictures don’t lie: it’s the same old GoldenEye, including blurry textures and square characters and backdrops. Newer consoles allow you to go up to a higher resolution (4K in the Xbox’s case), but other than that it feels like a game pulled from a Nintendo 64, because that’s exactly it.

In effect, that means legendary split-screen multiplayer remains, but only on Xbox. The biggest gripe so far is that each platform has a different multiplayer mode: on Xbox it’s split-screen, while the Switch version has an online mode.

GoldenEye 007 will be available from January 27.
