Google controls what apps it allows in Android Auto, and while it recently opened its hand by allowing new categories like weather, developers have stepped in to fill in the gaps. There is therefore a dynamic ecosystem of Android Auto apps that aren’t on Google PlayWell, Google admits them to us.
Many of these apps bypass Android Auto’s limitations or allow us to perform highly requested functions that Google doesn’t allow even if the car is parked. We tell you what they are the best apps for Android Auto that you won’t find on Google Play.
And where are these applications?
Before starting the list, it will be interesting for you to know where you are going to find these applications. For starters, many of them are open source and you’ll find them on GitHub, although two apps have positioned themselves as underground Android Auto app stores
The two main unofficial Android Auto app stores are DAAwhich you can download from GitHub and AA Store, which is also on GitHub. There are other apps of this style, although all the apps we mention below are in one or the other.
Warning: the vast majority of these applications should only be used when the car is parked Otherwise, in addition to putting your safety at risk, you could receive significant fines.
CarStream
CarStream is one of many alternatives that exist unofficially for watch YouTube videos on Android Auto. Its operation is quite intuitive as it basically involves opening the YouTube website in the browser.
- Available on AAStore and AAAD
CarTube
In CarTube you will find exactly the same thing: the possibility of watch YouTube in the car using Android Auto. You can log in to see your video recommendations and the channels you follow, and it supports navigation with gestures.
- Available on AA Store and GitHub
IPcarTV
IPcarTV brings together two of our favorite things: free TNT channels and Android Auto. In other words, it is a form of watch TV channels on Android Auto, after providing you with an IPTV list of channels like the one on TDTChannels. If you want to see all the channels, you must make a donation (otherwise you only have access to the first three of each list).
- Available on AA Store and GitHub
Local video player
If all you want is watch your own videos, those that you have saved on your mobile, in Android Auto, then the application to use is Local Video Player. Its use is quite intuitive, because it is integrated into the menu Share of Android so you can send any video to the car screen.
- Available on AA Store and GitHub
car stop
One of the first unofficial Android Auto applications to gain popularity was Fermata Auto, a music player (available on Google Play) which, in its version for Android Auto, doubles functions such as YouTube player
- Available on AAAD, AA Store and GitHub
Screen2Auto
One of my favorite unofficial Android Auto apps is Screen2Auto, which turn your Android Auto screen into a tablet with its own launcher with which you can open any application and not just compatible ones.
AA Mirror Plus
AA Mirror is an application for mirror mobile screen on Android Auto and, being open source, there are all kinds of derivative versions, such as AA Mirror Plus. When we open it we will see the same thing on the car screen as on the mobile screen, which opens up a wide range of possibilities.
- Available in AA and AAAD stores
Passenger AA
An unofficial and quite original Android Auto application is AA Passenger, which allows other passengers in the car to control send content such as photos, videos, music or addressesusing the menu Share of their cell phones.
- Available on AA Store, AAAD and GitHub
AA Store custom apps
Finally, if you haven’t found any apps matching what you’re looking for, you can always Create your own app from your favorite website. This is a function included in AA Store with which you can generate custom applications that open a specific website. So, for example, you can have a giant compass in the car.
