Google continues to update our favorite operating system with Android 14, although the the next big version is in the oven: Android 15 and its first public beta start revealing update details. We tested it, breaking down the new features we found, although many more remain in the works as they are still in early stages.
One of them is the announced return of widgets on the lock screen, which after their disappearance in Android 5.0 return to put some tools at your fingertips. This is how they will work from a space exclusively dedicated to them.
Android 15 widgets are coming to the lock screen
As we read in Android Authority, expert Mishaal Rahman only needed the first beta of Android 15 to enable widgets on lock screen. While this feature isn’t out yet – it needs to be enabled internally – we can take a look at it to see how it will work.
Of course, in the specialized media they warn that everything can change overnight: the first beta of Android 15 is only one of four planned before the stable launch in the fall. Therefore, this feature and others could change or simply disappear if Google does not consider it advanced enough.
In fact, we can see that these widgets on the lock screen are still not finished, with some interface errors this spoils the result. For example, the clock is overlaid on the widget area. Another asterisk about this function: it is necessary to have the Hub Mode function, present in tablets like that of Google; excludes Google Pixel phones.
Now, with pinning mode enabled, an option called “Show widgets on lock screen” will appear. There are more, with a button that forces “Allow any widget on the lock screen”, so without exception, those that can be added to the home screen They will do the same thing in blocking.
With all of this enabled we can achieve the widget area by swiping from the right edge of the lock screen. It will prompt us to press a button to add our first widget, appearing on a card that will not return later. In any case, by holding down the widgets area you can also add them.
Later they can be edited in a new screen where it is possible add them, remove them or rearrange them (cannot be resized yet). Another important aspect is that to access the widget editor it is necessary to unlock the device, thus preventing third parties from modifying the widget area.
For now, and it looks like it will continue this way, widgets on the lock screen They will only work on devices with large diagonal screens. This isn’t a bad approach, as these are the only devices where they would be used to their fullest. However, other companies, such as Samsung, have also integrated it into their mobile phones.
