At this point, it is still unclear whether generative artificial intelligence will be a revolution or a curiosity in the history of humanity. What is evident is the commitment of the technology sector to this technology, with all major companies having fully adopted it in just one year. From Google with Gemini to ChatGPT, the potential is enormous, although curiously, the AI that has the most potential to surprise the average user is Meta.
This week, Meta announced the launch of a tool that can make us use AI on a daily basis, almost without us realizing it. It’s called AI Studio, and it is an application capable of creating “digital clones” of anyone so you can talk to them as if they were real; and it’s as shocking as it sounds. Basically, it allows you to create a digital version of yourself and customize it to do whatever you want, with your style and personality; and when you’re done, you can talk to this digital version of yourself and share it on Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger with your friends and contacts so they can use it as if they were talking to you.
It’s a concept that sounds like something out of a science fiction movie, but it’s real. AI Studio allows you to create AI based on multiple models, or from scratch. We can make AI good at cooking to teach us recipes, be able to create our favorite “memes” like the ones we share with our friends, or even generate messages to accompany our Instagram photos.
AI Studio is based on Llama 3.1, the latest version of the Meta language model. Another option is to create “digital friends” with whom we can talk about different topics; in fact, it is not even necessary for this AI to represent a human, and we can make pet clones or even an object that has come to life.
This is not the first time that Meta has opted for the concept of “digital clones”. When it presented its first version of Meta AI, it did so by offering the possibility of chatting with digital versions of famous peopleallowing us to ask questions about their lives or enjoy little games via chat.
It seems that AI Studio is the evolution of this concept, allowing everyone to create their own AI. The integration of AI Studio on Instagram is a good proof of the potential of this technology. Meta will allow Instagram creators to create their own AI as an “extension of themselves”; this AI can be trained with the content of Instagram posts, customizing it to avoid certain topics or to share certain links that the creator wants to promote. Once configured, This AI will be able to respond to fans’ Instagram messages who wants to talk to the creator; the AI’s responses will indicate that we are not actually talking to the real person.
At the moment, AI Studio is only available to Instagram users in the United States. The launch in Europe, for the moment, is doubtful. Meta will not launch its artificial intelligence in Europe due to the use of user data that requires this type of systems and that could violate European data protection law.
