There are times when it seems that the more technologically advanced a product is, the more privacy risks it carries. This happens with cell phones, computers, and even with some accessories. In Europe we are increasingly aware of cybersecurity, and it is something important in an increasingly computerized world.
There are many accessories that, if their security is compromised, can endanger the privacy and intimacy of users, a good example of this are smart watches, but also location beacons. These devices are small devices that, Thanks to Bluetooth, they can offer the user their location
These are generally very secure devices, but now it has been discovered that a hacker gained access to the internal tools of Tile, one of the companies that makes these types of devices, putting its users’ data at risk. .
Massive data leak
According to media 404, the company that creates location tags, Tile, suffered a cyberattack from a hacker, who managed to steal user information. In the hacker’s own words, he “had access to everything”, including customer addresses and data, phone numbers and emails.
Fortunately, this data does not include the current location of the device, but among the items the cybercriminal was able to access are tools intended for internal company use. These are intended for the use of workers, and were used to massively collect users’ personal data
He managed to gain access by using login credentials that could have belonged to a former employee, then starting to request data with these tools. It is obviously striking that these powers were still operational.
According to the company itself, the chance is that this cybercriminal only accessed an internal platform with limited information, which does not include sensitive data such as card numbers, passwords or Real-time location data from tile locators.
