We all know the airplane mode of our mobiles: it is used to cut all connections, mandatory when you get on a plane, and useful at other times when you want avoid notifications and calls. But it seems that the European Union no longer considers it essential and plans to eliminate it.
To the detriment of what is happening in Europe, it is true that when getting on a flight it is uncomfortable to activate it and then deactivate it on landing. For that, Google has a solution in the form of a most curious patent
Airplane mode ‘connected’ is how Google wants cellphones to work
As we know, some connections can interfere with airborne communications, such as WiFi or GPS. That’s why they force us to activate the airplane mode during the flight, and that’s why it was created.
But it’s not as easy as it looks, because directly depends that all passengers remember, understand and proceed with enabling the aforementioned Airplane Mode. In addition, our mobiles maintain background processes that require the use of the network, such as synchronization of accounts or backup copies.
Because of this case, Google filed a patent which explains how to improve the management of wireless communications in portable devices. He is nicknamed “Connected flight mode” and will allow our teams to switch to an airplane mode taking into account different specificities.
What are these factors? Well, our devices would be connected to the flight and would know data such as altitude, speed or pressure at all times, activating this connected airplane mode if necessary. Thus, certain communications such as mobile networks would be prohibited, even if it could also restrict others such as WiFi or Bluetooth.
That is, it would have several sub-modes that would be activated depending on flight phase in which we meet. Each sub-mode would behave differently from the others, disabling or enabling the relevant functions. In the end, the user would gain in comfort, and would not require his attention.
It should be noted, however, that for the moment it’s just a patent. We don’t know for sure if Google or another company will eventually make it a reality. In fact, it should pass certain certifications, attract customer interest and prove its viability. But what leaves no doubt is that it would be an infallible method, improving the conditions of passengers.
