More than three years have passed since the launch of AirTag and millions of people around the world use it to locate their items. Keys, the motorcycle, a suitcase… The AirTag has already left us with incredible anecdotes and stories, such as truck thefts over a million dollars. Today’s story is also related to the thefts and money recovered from the AirTag. In this case, up to five million dollars worth of materials were recovered from an American carpenter.
After experiencing several robberies, this carpenter decided to buy AirTags to try his luck
We are located in the north of the state of Virginia, more precisely in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. There, a carpenter had been suffering nightly thefts of all his tools for several nights. On the first two occasions, His van was found broken into and some of his work utensils were missing.. He promised himself that if there was a third time, he would act accordingly. To do this, he bought a good quantity of AirTags and distributed them around the equipment.
The thieves have returned and on this third occasion they took fifty tools valued at thousands of dollars. And yes, a lotor that the thieves stole an AirTag inside. From there, tracking began through the iPhone’s search app and led the carpenter to the Washington DC suburbs. He was sensible and didn’t want to take the law into his own hands. Simply notified the police and testified about what happened.
The police did not expect such a significant discovery.
With the court order, the police prepared to go to the locations where all the AirTags were located. They turned out to be warehouses and a total of twelve different locationss. Among them, they found more than fifteen thousand tools valued at up to five million dollars. The county police chief himself was surprised.
The scope of the investigation is enormous and is still ongoing. We believe the tools were stolen from retail stores, businesses, vehicles, residential properties and construction sites.
The carpenter recovered half a dozen of his stolen tools. In addition, the police identified around eighty victims of these robberies and created a website so these victims could add their data and recover their stolen tools.
Apple’s AirTag has been the protagonist of many theft stories and on this new occasion another is added. This little device continues to prove its usefulness, helping people recover their lost or stolen property. The carpenter’s story is just one more example of how technology can help us in all kinds of situations.
