With the huge deployment that Google is making of its AI, each of its applications will end up receiving a pinch of Gemini. And Gmail has already integrated it, although for the moment it only works in English: I was able to test it in Gmail for Android and the truth is that it offers a series of uses that Expanding Email Horizons.
I am not one of those who trust AI to write my emails, even though it already has intelligent functions in the applications I use other than Gmail. Writing an email personally, without external help and with what I want to convey expressed in characters seems to me the best way to communicate by email, even if I know that there will be those who will appreciate that AI frees them from writing. In addition, Gemini in Gmail goes far beyond writing emails: this is what has been most useful to me.
Gemini in Gmail not only writes emails, but can also summarize reply threads
Google introduced Gemini in testing in Gmail in May of this year. To date, it has expanded to users in a very limited way, initially in the United States. It is now also found in Gmail in other countries, although it only works change gmail language to us english
When Gmail enables Gemini in the mail app, the star AI feature appears at the top of the screen, just to the right of the avatar (in the search box). Clicking on the said icon Gemini can summarize daily and weekly mailing listThis is very useful for those of us who have a full email inbox.
With the pending email list, it’s super easy to stay on top of what’s important without having to organize emails. Plus, another feature I like about Gemini in Gmail is that it can summarize communications. I have a really long email and want to make sure it’s really important? I summarize and Gemini saves me from having to skim read it.
Gemini can summarize a specific email and make a summary of an entire email chain. This makes it easier to locate what is important
In addition to summarizing a specific email, Gemini can summarize the endless chains of replies that end up nested within the email and that take so much work to locate a specific part. Don’t know which email they confirmed the dinner address in? No need to go all the way down the chain, Gemini sums up the whole thread with the most important thing about email.
And yes: Geminis also write emails
The smart summary features are very good and save a lot of time, although I admit that the ability to compose emails set the necessary tone This is the best of Gemini. And it works very well, both in writing from scratch and in correcting what has already been written.
- Writing from scratch. When you open a new draft, the pencil icon with a star and the text “Help me write” appears. All I have to do is give Gemini a command on how I want to receive the email and the AI will compose it according to the request.
- Suggested answers. Every time I open an email and click the reply button, Gemini suggests different responses that fit the context. I just choose one and the email is automatically composed; which I can edit if I’m not convinced, Gemini never sends a reply automatically.
- Correction of a written text. This is also very useful because sometimes I can’t find the tone I’m looking for in the email. I can copy the text and activate Gemini to ask it to make corrections for a kinder, friendlier or more respectful tone for example. Gmail lacks a button to correct what has already been written, but a copy/paste works too.
Although it is necessary to use English in Gmail for Gemini to be active, all requests can be made in english. The text is rendered in this language and perfectly written, so there is no more worry than having the interface in another language.
A great addition with one drawback: privacy
Gmail is not the champion of privacy, since this email app can read all incoming and outgoing emails. And everything I do with Gemini is also logged; no matter how much Google keeps data anonymized and it doesn’t train its AI with interactions. At least that’s what it states on its privacy page.
All interactions with Gemini require an active internet connection, the AI does not work at the device level (not even on mobile phones like the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which integrate Gemini Nano). The texts are therefore downloaded to Google’s servers, a delicate step for the most confidential emails.
Leaving aside the privacy implications, which the use of Gmail itself already has, I think this email client wins a lot with Gemini, it is one of the integrations that I consider most successful. Writing emails is good, but summarizing endless chains seems even better to me: it gives me life. For that alone, it is worth it.
