AirTag security only works in 1 out of 3 cases

According to a report from Motherboard (via Vice), incidents involving Apple AirTags involve women being trackedfor the most part, and as a result they end up calling the police. Apple trackers are clear evidence that a special purpose item can become illegal.

In 3 cases, only in 1 the Apple AirTag works correctly

For 8 months, Motherboard was responsible for reviewing police department records in the United States. Out of 150 cases where the Apple AirTag is mentioned, 50 of them are women

who activated a distress call when they received notifications that they were carrying a tracker that did not belong to them.

Of those cases, only half were able to identify who placed the AirTag. Unfortunately, this is harassment from ex-partners, husbands and even bosses. Trackers are placed on their cars to ensure they have an accurate location. A case that has been talked about is that of a model who was followed for hours without realizing that they were following her.

To cite a few case examples, a man was able to slash a woman’s tires and put an AirTag on her for tracking.

Another man (with a history of assault) placed an AirTag to travel to the same location as his ex-partner, producing a simulation of a chance encounter. Several of these cases resulted in the arrest of the harasser.

It is through these cases that one can realize that this tracker is not effective for what it was created for

, to prevent the theft of objects or locate a lost object. The statement of a security expert who told Motherboard that the AirTag launch is “completely ridiculous” is striking.
