AlDente, the app I use on macOS to preserve Mac battery life

De las baterías de litio sabemos dos cosas: que un alto número de ciclos de cargo y décarga eroded su vida útil, y que permanecer duree el menor tiempo possible entre el 0-20% y el 80-100% de su capacity ayuda à alargar health. The first concerns those who are forced to work daily with their laptop away from a charger. The second, to those of us who use a laptop connected to the mains for many hours up to date.

For those of us, those of us who bought a MacBook to use it most of the time as an iMac, there’s a cool app that helps our battery stay 100% unstressed for so long, though Apple is taking some steps to stop that stress. This is AlDente, a superb designation

for software that manages do not “cook” the battery of our Mac completely… but take it out of the water a little earlier.

Limit load vs optimized load

Basically, this is what it allows us to do: limit the percentage of load that our Mac will reach. And that’s where we can define the 80% (or the percentage you want, if it’s another). It fits into the menu bar and just works. The basic (and free) version only lets you do this, and an option to drain the battery even if the power adapter is still connected.

The paid version (AlDente Pro) has several additional options, such as protection against high temperatures (another enemy of circuits and batteries) or even a calibration mode, a step not bad to take from time to time but between boredom and forgetting we tend to forget. It costs 11.50 dollars per year, although a one-time payment of 24.20 dollars is offered as an alternative that allows you to use it for life.

On the other side of the mirror is the optimized load from Apple, a native macOS optionalso present on the rest of the platforms, which detects our charging patterns to only charge the device up to 80% until a few minutes before we disconnect the charger again, when it completes charging until 100%.

The problem? That this is very convenient on mobile devices, but not so much on computers, which we often use continuously plugged in. And above all, it depends on our habits, but the day we break them – because that’s life, friends – we can be sold with an insufficient battery to last the day.

AlDente, in any case, sets this limit continuously, which Apple’s native option does not and it’s especially good for those of us who go through the day with the MacBook plugged into the outlet.

This application can also be purchased in its Pro version through the Setapp subscription, a service allowing the use of up to 200 applications on macOS (and iOS in some cases) for a single payment of $9.99 per month. Of course, it is not compatible with any Mac, only with MacBook Air from 2018 (those redesigned with USB-C ports) and MacBook Pro from 2016 (also those that integrate USB-C).
