For several months we have been hearing rumors that WhatsApp is preparing an important new feature, communities. Today it was Mark Zuckerberg who confirmed the existence of this feature with an announcement on Facebook in which he explained what they are and what they were designed for.
What are WhatsApp Communities
When WhatsApp started, we could only write to one contact at a time. It was the substitute for SMS. Later came groups, which were a step above and allowed several people to talk at the same time.
Communities are the next step, a way to bring groups together, forgive the redundancy. For example, the different groups related to a course or an academic work could be brought together. All would come under the same Community, that of work or studies, of course.
One of the peculiarities of these communities is that we will come into contact with many unknown people, which sometimes happens in groups, but is usually not normal.
In addition, administrators will be able to modify which groups are part of the communities, how their members behave, etc.
Of course, search options within communities will be limited, so it’s not a problem if strangers start talking to us.
Improvements in WhatsApp groups
Along with this exciting feature, improvements will be developed for WhatsApp groups. For example, we will have reactions, something we have already seen in normal chats and is now confirmed that we will also have in group chats, although it has been leaked.
File sharing options will allow larger items, something important if we are going to use them for classes, work, etc. The limit will now be 2 GB.
Finally, we will have the possibility of make group calls with more members. We went from 8 to 32 people maximum.
A gradual deployment
This function will start to be available today for select beta users.
Little by little, it will spread to the whole world, even if we don’t know the deadlines. We know it won’t be fast because the company wants to take privacy seriously, a key part of not just communities, but the platform itself.
