The Apple ecosystem continues to change in Europe, thanks to the DMA!
Starting September 16th and the release of iPadOS 18, Users in the European Union will be able to purchase iPad apps through alternative stores to the App Store. The move comes on the heels of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which requires “digital gatekeeper” options to download apps that aren’t officially available in the Apple Store on the company’s devices, as began to be implemented months ago with the launch of six alternative stores for iPhone users.
Alternative stores come to the iPad
Although the Digital Markets Act (DMA) initially focused on iPhone and iOS users, the European Commission, recognizing Apple’s influence in the tablet market and the potential adverse effects on commercial users, decided Extend DMA reach to iPadOS.
This change means that iPad users in the European Union will enjoy greater freedom by being able to download apps from the App Store and other alternative stores. Additionally, installed applications may integrate search engines other than those established by default by Apple.thereby expanding navigation and customization options for users.
After a six-month adjustment period, Apple has complied with the DMA requirements and, starting with iPadOS 18, users in the European Union will be able to access the options available to find other apps.
Despite the benefits for users, trust in their security remains one of the most controversial issues. In this regard, Apple has taken responsibility for controlling apps distributed in alternative stores, requiring developers to adhere to certain security standards.
Furthermore, Apple has imposed new commercial conditions on developersincluding the payment of a royalty for the use of fundamental technologies.

How to install an alternative app store for iPhone?
Unlike traditional apps, alternative app stores are not obtained directly from the App Store. To install one, you need to visit the corresponding developer’s website and follow these steps:
- Go to the store developer’s website.
- Press the download button.
- A warning message will appear, enter iPhone settings and you will see a new section in the upper area.
- Tap and a series of warnings about the developer will appear.
- Tap Allow.
- Go back to the developer’s website and download the App Store.
Can you install an alternative app store on your iPhone from anywhere?
No. For now, this is a measure conditioned by local laws. At present, This option is only available in Europe and is linked to the user account region. If a user changes residence to a country outside Europe, they will lose access to these stores, demonstrating that the availability of these platforms is temporary and subject to changes in legislation.
