The road to Android 14 continues. After releasing the first Developer Preview, Google released the second today; and as was the case before, the amount of novelties is small but important.

Everything indicates that, when Android 14 is released next August, it will be a system very similar to Android 13; the most important changes will affect security, and DP1 had already anticipated this with the blocking of old aps.

More security with Android 14

The DP2 version of Android 14 is all about privacy and security, with several changes that apps can take advantage of; or, in some cases, they will be mandatory. As an example of the second, Android 14 will have a new dialog box that will appear when applications try to access the photos or videos that we have stored on the mobile.

We can now select exactly the files we want the application to see, by choosing the second option; the rest of the photos and videos will not be accessible by the application and will therefore be safe. We will also have the option to allow access to all photos or completely block access if we wish. This popup will only appear if the app does not use the new Android photo picker introduced with Android 13.

Another novelty related to security is the new Android 14 credential manager, which will allow us to keep all our accounts in one place; this will be necessary to make passwordless login a reality. Google wants to completely eliminate this practice, and in the future we can simply select the account with which we want to log in and identify ourselves with the fingerprint reader or whatever our mobile has.

The overall experience on Android will also improve; This release includes several code optimizations that result in a faster system and less battery consumption. Specifically, Android 14 will bring improved memory management, blocking the activity of apps that have been in the background for a long time.

Many users will also be happy to know that Android 14 will allow you to dismiss notifications that always remain active, as long as they are not related to system functions.

A small but appreciated detail is that European users will be able to modify our regional preferences; for example, what units of measurement we want to use for temperature, or what day we want the week to start (not in all cultures, it starts on Monday).

Finally, Google is preparing to open Android to other app stores, allowing app updates through other platforms; This is something that was already anticipated and is now implemented in this version of Android 14.

Android 14 Developer Preview 2 is available for Pixel phones, although most users shouldn’t download it and wait until August for the final release.
