The next version of Android is about to be released. After going through the first phase, it’s time to welcome Developer Preview 2, which anticipate some new accounts which will be in the final version.
Android 14 is still in development and not ready for users, but Google usually shares previews, then goes through beta to finally release the stable version. That’s all what brings Android 14 DP2as well as compatible mobiles that can take advantage of this preliminary system.
News from the second ‘Developer Preview’ of Android 14
Android 14 DP2 comes with new features that will improve the user experience when it lands in late summer or fall. let’s see what new features are added
For starters, Google is putting a heavy emphasis on improvements for devices with different form factors. Android 12L and Android 13 have improved the system behavior on tablets and foldablesbut Android 14 will go further by offering libraries to implement style Low latency and moti on prediction.
On the other hand, security and privacy will be reinforced in this update. now him authorization manager includes new options when an app needs to access our gallery. As we see in the screenshot below, we can allow full access, not allow it or choose which images we are going to share temporarily.
Still in the field of security, Android 14 will improve the credential manager
How could it be otherwise, the next version of the operating system will have better performance: there is Performance improvement thanks to renewed management of memory and notifications. Starting with the fourteenth version, cached applications will no longer run in the background, at least those outside of specific APIs.
Regarding the language configuration, we also have new features. We could already change the language of a specific application, but now it will be possible add other options based on regional preferences. For example, if we live abroad, we can set temperature units, numbering systems and the start of the week as we wish. There is a new API to control this and it will centralize these locales to avoid the user having to configure each app separately.
To complete the series of improvements, we cannot forget the changes to alternative app stores. We already knew about this modification, but it becomes effective in Developer Preview 2. If we have installed an application from an external store, it will have the possibility to keep said application up to date, that is, it will not depend exclusively on Google Play Store.
No surprises in compatible mobiles
It is usual that Android developer releases do not leave Google’s mobile wallet, i.e. the Google Pixel. Maybe with the arrival of the betas this will change, but for the moment these are all compatible devices with Android 14 Developer Preview 2:
