Google already has the new version of its mobile operating system in the oven, which will be android 14. Currently in internal testing within the company, the successor to Android 13 promises to take a leap forward without pointing to major changes.
With the usual renewals every year, not only is there an annual refresh of mobile phones, but they usually come to market with the refresh of the operating system. And Android is one of the representatives of this strategy: we create a round version every year with an associated dessert name. With 2023 marking the start of Android 14, it’s time to sort out the whole list of news, which phones will be updated and when they will. Let’s go.
Which devices will update to Android 14
At this time, we do not know which Android-compatible mobile phones, tablets and other products will be updated to version 14. We know of some phones that will receive the update in time: Pixels. Concretely, these will be the luckiest:
When will Android 14 be available?
This version of the operating system is currently under development and, for the time being, There is neither open version for developers (Dev Preview) nor beta. Even so, we can establish an update schedule if we analyze Google’s usual strategy with its system.
The first thing we’ll see will be the Previous Developer Release or Dev Preview, an experimental update for Google Pixel (likely starting with Pixel 5) that He will begin his journey in February 2023. Still waiting.
For the first open beta of Android 14, we will have to wait for Google’s most important event, the Google I/O. We still do not know when it will take place: according to previous years, it will have to wait until May 2023.
The Dev Preview would be released in February, the beta in May and the final version at the end of the summer, probably in September
Almost certainly final and stable Android 14 will be released in late August or early September 2023, already with an associated dessert name (although unofficially, Google will officially name the Android system version 14). Considering Android 13 was Tiramisu, now it’s time for a dessert with “u”. And Google has already confirmed it: Android 14 will be an upside-down cake or a cake cooked upside down, a pastry process that applies to sweets like tarte tatin.
How to update to Android 14
Each manufacturer will release its own Android 14 update schedule and ways to update devices already in the market. As per usual, an update notice should appear as soon as the mobile has it available. It is also convenient to search manually from system settings once Android 14 is already in circulation.
The Google Pixel will be the first to be updated, already with the ongoing Dev Preview (and later with betas). To register, you must do so on this link. Update files will also be available on the Android developer website.
What’s new in Android 14
With no features discovered in the official update, we have to content ourselves with mentioning some of the leaks that already point to Android 14. This system update It will not undergo a huge evolution compared to Android 13, at least with regard to the aesthetic aspect, important innovations or configurations. With a very mature system that works perfectly, there is less and less room to introduce deep changes.
Android 14 will surely restore one of the missing navigation gestures, that of preview the previous screen when returning from the edge of the screen. Present in the developer options of Android 13, the gesture would be included by default in Android 14.
Google would almost definitely put 32-bit aside with its new version of the system; there would therefore no longer be support for very old applications. As stated in the AOSP code, ARMv9 kernels will not be able to run 32-bit applications. Since phones that receive Android 14 will have a recent SoC, in practice the system will only support 64 bits.
Android 14 will force manufacturers to support the AV1 codec, which is open source and completely free. This codec promises to improve video streaming with a more optimized and much more efficient compression.
Introduced by Apple in the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro family, the satellite connection, to carry out communications without mobile network coverage or WiFi, will be available with Android 14 so that manufacturers can introduce it in their devices.
Apart from what was confirmed by the first leaks, Android 14 should dive into privacy and security to offer more options to the user with which to manage device permissions, different hardware elements and also software. Material You will evolve in the options without moving away from what has already been seen in terms of design. And the adaptive hue changes are sure to reach every corner of the devices.
