Android 14 paves the way for the disappearance of mobile SIM cards

Last year, Apple forced the use of the eSIM card in the United States in order to take the first step in an action that will be followed by the rest of the manufacturers, Better late than never so it seems to be recovered from Android 14.

From Android 14 Developer Preview, you can find a series of hidden settings that show that Google would be one of the first to integrate the eSIM. In fact, there is an option for convert physical SIM to eSIM.

In an upcoming version of the settings app, Mishaal Rahman discovered a new option called “Convert to eSIM”. The text appears in the search interface instead of a dedicated menu as one might understand.

Rahman himself maintains that Android 14 is also preparing an option to transfer eSIMs between different devices, although no screenshots prove it yet.

The new option for settings is currently not working as it requires additional resources. This showed up in the pre-installed SIM Manager app on some Pixel phones that use multiple SIM cards and network-related features.

Also in Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 Some of these necessary resources have been added, although this new version does not have the necessary resources to be able to activate this new option and thus test it.

Now, importantly, the operators will have their role, since the conversion from a SIM to an eSIM will not be possible for everyone. In other words, operators will have to provide support to activate the new eSIMs.

Another problem, via Android Police, which is also present in iPhone eSIMs which cannot be transferred to Android mobile, is that transferring eSIMs via different devices is not something native to the specification of the card itself, so we will have to see the compatibility between the different Android mobiles.
