Apple asks Sony for more panels to increase production of the Vision Pro

Apple Vision Pro

The success of the Apple Vision Pro seems to be on the rise. The sheer amount of novelty, technology, and capability of the Big Apple’s new mixed reality glasses may have exceeded the demand Apple had anticipated for this first generation. In fact, in the weeks leading up to WWDC, there was speculation about the exclusivity of glasses and the existence of a small number of units

for this first revolutionary product. However, Apple seems to have asked for more tiles to increase production to Sony, which fails to deliver.

Sony denies the increase in slabs requested by Apple

Early rumors indicated that Apple might start selling a small number of Apple Vision Pros this summer. However, availability announced for early 2024 and first in the United States. Production was planned for 100,000 units that first year. However, something happened in Cupertino, they expect the demand to be higher and prepare for a possible increase in mass production.

The manufacturer that provides the mixed reality glasses OLED panels is Sony. Apparently Apple would have asked Sony for an increase in panel production in order to be able to manufacture more Apple Vision Pro and Sony refused to increase production. The Elec support assures that Sony is capable of manufacturing around 900,000 OLED Vision Pro screens, but this support also reminds that Sony can only supply Apple with 100,000 to 200,000 panels per quarter, which would make a total of 800,000 panels in taking into account that each glass has two panels.

Therefore, from this means, they make sure that Sony is capable of manufacturing displays to produce around 400,000 Apple Vision Pros in 2023. Also, these panels are initially made exclusively for Sony, so Apple may not find a way to extend this offering.
