Steve Wozniak was the co-founder of Apple with Steve Jobs and it is fortunate that we still have him among us to be able to continue to learn from him and his experience. Not just anyone has co-founded a company that becomes the largest in the world for years running.
And although Steve Wozniak is no longer on Apple’s current board of directors, he is still invited to many university events, conferences and graduations to inspire young and old. On this occasion he shared how he educated his children and how they educated him to achieve the success sought by so many fathers and mothers.
The key to children’s success according to Steve Wozniak
Being a father or mother is full of uncertainties. On the one hand, youand you feel the need to be the guide of your life, especially during the first years. On the other hand, you don’t want to interrupt their personal growth too much, but you still want to avoid as many problems and failures as possible. Now 73, Wozniak shared his experience during the University of Colorado Boulder’s commencement address.
My parents let my heart follow. When you really want something and it’s your passion, your parents should support you. Don’t say to yourself, “No, you should study that.”
Steve Wozniak himself enrolled in the said university in 1968 although was expelled for hacking of the institution to make jokes. In front of this situation, Wozniak’s parents didn’t stop him, and they encouraged him to continue developing his interest in computing. Years later, and thanks to the support of his parents, he founded Apple with Steve Jobs.
They are your children, but they must make their own decision
Every father and mother wants your children are successful in life and do not present any type of deficiency. It is normal to want to redirect them towards careers offering more employment opportunities, to enroll them in one school rather than another… It is for their good. For now, Steve Wozniak agrees.
The difference is when you observe that your son or daughter has a particular and different ability that you want to develop. Do you like art history? Support him, there are few escapes. You could be a professor, a curator in a museum… Otherwise, all your life you will think about what would have happened if you had studied this.
Trust your children, support them in their passions and watch them flourish.
There is time to fail if necessary, but inside they will be calm. How many of us here are working on what we actually study? How many of us believed that this career was the one we wanted and now we would have chosen another?
For Wozniak, you just need to support and realize the project you have in mind. Because if it’s not done nowcertainly, it ended up being done much later resulting in a loss of initial time. These are Steve Wozniak’s tips for raising our children, which he has experienced himself and which he has now passed on to his own.
