It’s been over three years since Apple launched the M1 iMac, two years since the 27-inch iMac was discontinued, and about six months since Apple told us it wouldn’t make a new 27-inch model with the Apple chip. However, a new report claims that Apple hasn’t given up on the idea of a larger iMac.
In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman claims that Apple is “continuing to explore the possibility of a large-screen iMac.” He adds that it’s “not certain” whether the model will feature an M4 chip or “a product that comes out next year or later.”
So it’s possible, though unlikely, that Apple will launch a larger iMac this year. Previous rumors have indicated that the new model could have a 32-inch display with Pro and Max processors. It will likely be a model similar to the iMac Pro, with a higher-end price and specs and color options inspired by the MacBook Pro.
In December, after the launch of the M3 iMac, Apple sent out a note to reviewers saying it had no plans to release a new 27-inch iMac. However, that doesn’t mean a larger model is in the works to target a different type of user. When Apple discontinued the 27-inch iMac in 2022, it coincided with the launch of the 27-inch Studio Display and Mac Studio, so any large-screen iMac would be larger than that anyway.
We expect Apple to launch the first M4 Macs this fall, so we should know very soon whether Apple is launching a new, larger iMac. In the meantime, you can keep up to date with rumors about the 32-inch iMac and the updated 24-inch iMac.
