Water resistance is one of many factors that appeared on Apple devices thanks to the development of sewage systems, the completion of ports (such as headphones) or new production systems.
This is part of the story, though in no case Apple's warranty covers liquid damage, and it's also important to remember that each device is water resistant at different rates. Let's look at these small differences, clarifying concepts.
IP rating
When we say that a product is water resistant and dust we need to eliminate this resistance. The International Electrotechnical Commission (ICE) explains various levels of protection depending on the standard IP. This level uses two numbers to determine the resistance of solids and water. Unique codes have an IPXY style look where X is the number associated with solids and dust and Y is the number associated with water resistance.
Dissipation of solids can range from 0 to 6 with no protection, 5 dust protection and 6 full dust protection.
In The water resistance level is from 0 to 9 0 with no protection class, 3 resistance to moisture, 4 resistance to rain, 7 resistance to temporary depth and depth and 8 resistance to long and deep immersion.
Splashes and first dives
The first one presented by Apple with some degree of water and dust resistance was the Apple Watch and the iPhone 7. The following year came the iPhone XR, X, 8 and 8 Plus and the Apple Watch Series 1. Apple It is not recommended to completely install some of these devices even though it has been proven that many have more opposition than the guaranteed one.
- Apple Watch (first generation): IPX7 resistance. They are not submissive
- Apple Watch Series 1: IPX7 resistance. They are not submissive
- IPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Resistance to IP67. Maximum depth of 1 meter is maximum for 30 minutes.
- IPhone 8 and 8 Plus: Resistance to IP67. Maximum depth of 1 meter is maximum for 30 minutes.
- IPhone X: Resistance to IP67. Maximum depth of 1 meter is maximum for 30 minutes.
- IPhone XR: Resistance to IP67. Maximum depth of 1 meter is maximum for 30 minutes.
Medium Depth
Later iPhone models have increased their waterproof features by increasing the IP rating. Although Apple no longer recommends installing some of these devices and even though the time for full guaranteed durations lasts within 30 minutes, the increase in depth means that, for example accidental fall in a lake in an anecdote (This iPhone sinks in the Indian Ocean waiting to be rescued).
- IPhone XS and SX Max: IP68 resistance. Maximum depth of 2 meters is maximum of 30 minutes.
- IPhone 11: IP68 resistance. Maximum depth of 2 meters is maximum of 30 minutes.
- IPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max: IP68 resistance. Maximum depth of 4 meters is a minimum of 30 minutes.
None of the iPhone is designed to be intentionally submerged, it is not for water use, it is simply for protecting the phone from liquid damage in the event of an unexpected dive. It is also important to emphasize that the water seal marker disappears with normal use
Water ducks
And with ducks I mean the Apple Watch from the second generation of watches, and from fresh water and salt. As well as the ability to enroll in swimming training The Apple Watch is less than 50 feet deep and are certified for water sports without calculating diving.
- Apple Watch Series 2: Resistance to IP69. Maximum 50 m depth.
- Apple Watch Series 3: Resistance to IP69. Maximum 50 m depth.
- Apple Watch Series 4: Resistance to IP69. Maximum 50 m depth.
- Apple Watch Series 5: Resistance to IP69. Maximum 50 m depth.
It is important to know that even though you are defeated even with salt water exposure to soaps, shampoos, conditioners or lotions can affect the brand hydraulics and acoustic membranes.
At the end of the day, keep in mind that, with the exception of the Apple Watch, liquid protection is designed to prevent damage to the final contact with them rather than taking in water photography or other uses. Will we still see progress? Yes, when you enter 2021 Apple unveils a rumored iPhone without ports perhaps their security is similar to that of the Apple Watch.
