The M1 Ultra chip makes the Mac Studio weigh almost a kilogram more than the model with M1 Max.
The new Mac Studio is the most powerful computer ever made by apple thanks to the amazing new M1 Ultra chip. However, in the technical specifications of the device, we were able to check how the version with the M1 Ultra weighs almost a kilogram more than the same Mac Studio with M1 Max chip. The weight of the Mac Studio with M1 Max is 2.7 kg and that of the Mac Studio with M1 Ultra is 3.6 kg. And Apple has officially explained why.
The M1 Ultra chip is basically two M1 Max chipped together, so although it should weigh more, one kilogram is too much and there must be another explanation. For this reason, The edge contacted Apple about the issue and the company has officially responded to them.
They have the same 370W power supply. The extra weight is because the M1 Ultra has a larger copper thermal module, while the M1 Max has an aluminum heatsink.
It seems that Apple has redesigned the heatsink of its processors since the M1 Ultra needs more dissipation and Apple has decided to bet on copper instead of aluminum. At room temperature, the weight of copper is 8.96 grams per cubic centimeter, while aluminum is 2.70 grams, a much lighter material.

Taking this into account, and the M1 Ultra chip is larger and therefore will require a larger heatsinkthis set significantly weighs down the Mac Studio when using the M1 Ultra chip.
This is not uncommon in the industry. the copper is used in high performance equipment because, being denser, it has more thermal mass and conductivity than aluminum, so it can retain more heat and move that heat faster.
Recall that the M1 Ultra has a 20-core processor with 16 high-performance cores and 4 high-efficiency cores. A 32-core neural engine can perform 22 trillion operations per second, and a 64-core GPU is eight times faster than the M1 chip. Which, combined with the fact that it’s two processors joined together, can make the chip gets hotter and lose performance.
Really weight is not something that matters too much in a computer like the Mac Studio to put on a desk. In a laptop like the MacBook Pro, weight is crucial, so it seems hard to us to see the M1 Ultra in a MacBook Pro.
