Apple has joined the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance, the organization whose mission is develop and improve methods and standards for authentication which help reduce current dependency on passwords.
Apple joins members like Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft, Samsung and others in the common goal of ensuring that the communications we make with different services are secure and share the same standards between different members: U2F.
What is U2F
He Universal 2nd Factor (U2F), which we can define as The second element of the universe, is an open source for enrichment characters and at the same time enables Double factor authentication to use USB or near-compatible (NFC) devices.
U2F keys can be used as an additional 2-step verification in protocol support services such as Dropbox, Facebook or Google. Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera browsers are already providing U2F support and Safari has started to support iOS 13.3 **.
In accordance with iOS 13.3, we may use physical security keys such as YubiKey to replace the codes we normally enter in web pages after entering our password. The process is as simple as connect the key to our iPhone or Mac during the authentication process.
