Apple Edge Cache is a new service that will allow improve the delivery of content to the network using Apple-managed cache servers inside different workstations.
Copy of the requested "local" content
Apple wants it use multinational infrastructure and their servers to store data near the location of its customers. This way the content can be stored on the server within the user's network in advance or as the content is viewed or downloaded.
In the second case, which we know as cache edgesWhen a client somewhere downloads, for example, an iOS update, the downloaded file will be stored in a cache. When other clients will download the same content, the network will remove it from the cache without accessing Apple's servers, managing to increase download times and network connectivity.
This practice is beneficial to all parties, as customers, we can download content faster, the operator will see less "unnecessary" traffic passing through its networks and Apple will see that its servers will be less needed. Other benefits are that using low Internet infrastructure reduces potential errors, routes are reduced, latency is reduced
Other companies like Netflix or Amazon are already using similar programs for content delivery.
At present Apple Edge Cache is available through an invitation-only program and those interested can submit an application through the service website to be considered. A minimum of 25Gbps of Apple traffic is required during peak hours and the company works primarily with end users among other requirements.
