At Apple they can’t find the right formula to find someone to fill the void left vacant by Jony Ive. Bloomberg manages some possible names.
Seems like yesterday when it was announced Departure of Jony Ive, the iconic head of design at Apple at the time of the immediate successors of Steve Jobs and Tim Cook. It seems that time still doesn’t pass so quickly since there is no number that can cover his position. There is also no adequate profile to offer what Ive himself has come to represent, just see his most representative creations.
Major Designers Flee Apple, No Name to Fill Jony Ive Void
According to Bloomberg, Those in Cupertino are considering forced marches to fill this vacancy but it was complicated since most of the design team left. Since before I left some important members as Danny Coster and Christopher Stringer they left to take other positionsone at GoPro, and the next to found a company called Syng.
In 2019, at the very beginning of the year, departures of more members continued to coincide in June with the announcement of Jony Ive’s retirement. In case you don’t remember why he left, I founded a new design consultancy company called LoveFrom. Finally, 4 members of the original team moved in with Ive to add 15 main team members who are extinct forever
Out of curiosity, Jony Ive was still tied to Apple as a collaborator on product design until the end of this relationship in July 2022.
Methods and work have completely changed in the design team
Why was there a lot of turnover in this Apple team? The reason is simple, the autonomy that Jony Ive’s team had. Today, other areas influence this team to such an extent that they manage cost reductions or drive decision-making.
About the names that are treated are 2, Alan Dye and Richard Howarth. Another option is to appoint one of the remaining designers from the original team. And the last, who is the old faithful, recruits an outside designer. Bloomberg notes that Howarth was unsuccessful in his latest transition from designer to manager. On the other hand, Dye would not be very well received since in his current role he has nothing to do with design, he is a software leader.
If Apple decided to recruit externally it wouldn’t look good at all incorporate someone with a past in rival companies like Google or Microsoft. This is the big dilemma that Apple has faced for several years, finding the next great chief designer.
