Thanks to several interviews conducted with the head of software engineering at Apple, Craig Federighi, it is possible to know that Stage Manager has been tested on all iPads, with and without the M1 chip.
iPad without M1 is not able to support Stage Manager
Thanks to David Phelan of Forbes, He asked Federighi directly if those of Cupertino were trying to perform the aforementioned function
In few words, “Stage Manager” tests were carried out on prototypes without M1. The early experience was not good and it was very obvious to the engineers who were responsible for it. They couldn’t limit themselves to not offering a base for the future and so they decided to do it above the M1 chips.
Another TechCrunch interview with Matthew Panzarino showed that the M1 chip ensures that all “Stage Manager” applications work right out of the box.
iPad launches with M1 boded good functions
It’s amazing how specs can change from device to device. The iPad Pro with M1 has 16GB of RAM with a USB-C Thunderbolt port. The previous generation only has 6 GB of RAM and the normal USB-C port. Apple already knew Stage Manager for a long time cast can be confirmed thanks to the launch of the iPad Air with M1.
Was this what users expected? Time will tell as this feature is currently in beta. The demo at WWDC 2022 was very positive but that will change depending on the end user. Moreover, it remains for Apple to focus this event on future iPads like the supposed iPad Pro with the M2 chip.
“Stage Manager” is the ability to resize iPad apps in overlapping windows, improving multitasking in a way we’ve never seen before from Apple. It will be compatible with an external screen up to 6K allowing to work with 4 apps on the iPad and 4 apps on the external screen.
