After the great success with ChatGPT, based on the GPT-3 language model, Open AI presented this week its next step with GPT-4. AND When it comes to Apple, we have yet to see a clear move towards AI capable of generating natural language.. In fact, just yesterday we reported that the Tim Cook-led company doesn’t seem to have any plans to apply similar techniques with Siri.
However, an exclusive report from 9to5Mac now reveals that Apple improves Siri with tvOS 16.4. Improvements that, in any case, could end up reaching iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
Siri only tells jokes with this new generation of language…for now
That was in the latest tvOS 16.4 beta, released this week, in which 9to5Mac found a framework they say will help Siri have ability to generate texts (written or narrated) in natural language. Something that is far from the usual operation of the Apple assistant, which is based on already predefined templates.
Currently they have only found feature to tell jokes or set timers. They also say this ability is experienced in order to help with tasks such as setting timers. And these are more than enough indications to see that we are far from “Apple ChatGPT”, since it seems only simple tests.
Regarding the fact that it is in tvOS, this does not mean that there is no trace of it in the rest of the systems. In fact, in 9to5Mac they claim that it is in the Apple TVs in which it is activated, but that the code is also included on iPhone, iPad, Mac and HomePod. The latter, by the way, is powered precisely by tvOS.
The fact is that this discovery casts more doubts than certainties at the moment. The previous information known so far about Apple’s strategy against Open AI tools, Microsoft or Google is that since Cupertino they do not plan anything similar. Therefore, it is unclear how they will take advantage of this language generation technology.
In fact, in 9to5Mac’s own report optimism is lowered that it means getting something similar to ChatGPT with Siri. Reports such as those issued by Mark Gurman are collected in reference to the fact that Apple does not test chatbot models with its assistant. Thus, this new discovery would not be contrary to this information.
What once again seems clear is that the next developer conference, WWDC, must be yes or yes a date to mark in red. And it is that these silent advances by Apple with AI and the promising Apple Reality Pro aim to have their placeholder in an event that we hope will be one of the most important in years.
