For the second time in as many weeks, Apple has updated the firmware for the AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C and Lightning variants).
Apple has not yet released release notes for this firmware update, but will do so on this support page.
This fall, AirPods 2 are expected to get a new “clinical-grade” hearing test feature as well as the ability to function like over-the-counter hearing aids. Apple received the first-ever FDA clearance for hearing aid software on September 12. There is evidence that the latest iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1 include code for this feature, but it is not yet enabled in the beta. It’s quite possible that Apple will enable it with a server-side switch when it’s ready, and these frequent AirPods Pro 2 firmware updates may be the result of rigorous internal testing of the feature.
Updating your AirPods firmware
There is no way to force an upgrade to the new firmware; it will automatically install when the AirPods are in their case and charging. It may take hours or even days to get the latest firmware. If you haven’t used your AirPods in a while, taking them out of their case and using them for a few minutes before putting them back in the charger can help speed things up.
To see what firmware version your AirPods are running, you can open the Settings app, select your connected AirPods (near the top), scroll down all the options until About section, and look at the Version double. You can also find this information in General > About > [name of your AirPods].
