While everyone has been expecting Apple to present its Apple AirTag smart tracker, the company has announced that the Search or Find My app will be compatible with third-party products to expand its reach.
Without a doubt, this seems like the prelude to what we may see very soon when the company announces its own tracker. Apple AirTag, a product that we have been talking about at length for a few years.
As Apple explains in the press release, the search application which currently allows locating Apple items such as iPhone or Apple Watch will now also work with other branded devices such as Belkin, Chipolo or VanMoof, among others.
The idea is that many products have their tracker built in even when they leave the factory, so Apple technology becomes a useful tool for tracking lost or stolen products.
How do I find things with the Find app?
Your iPhone’s Find app now displays a new item tab where you can add items. Proceed as follows:
- Open the search app
- Tap on “ Objects ” to add a new one
- Now click on add an object. You can also identify the object found
- Your iPhone will search for compatible nearby items so that you can tag them.
What products can I find with the search?
In addition to Apple products, such as iPhones, Apple Watch, Macs, and iPads, the following products will be able to be tracked with the Search app from April 12, 2021:
- Belkin Wireless Headphones, Soundform Freedom True
- Chipolo, ONE Spot article search tool
- VanMoof, S3 and X3 electric bikes
This is just the start of the new ecosystem, as Apple will open up the “ Find My Network Accessory Program ” to third-party brands through Apple’s Made for iPhone (MFi) program, meaning any developer of accessories will be able to connect new or existing.
Manufacturers who want their products to join the program will need to apply to the IMF program from Apple.
