The story would have been very different if Apple had released an iPhone like this.
Apple has been working on the iPhone for years and many ideas have gone through the heads of engineers in Cupertino. However, Tony Fadell has just unveiled a the weirdest iPhone prototypewhich is the initial stages and looks more like an iPod than the iPhone we all know.
Tony Fadell is considered the father of the iPod and was also involved in the development of the iPhone. Recently shared some secrets of the development of these devices and now, on the occasion of the launch of his new book called Build, he shared with Tech Crunch new details and photos about his time working at Apple and other tech companies.
Luckily Apple didn’t opt for this “iPod Phone” idea.
The “iPod phone”
This prototype iPhone has a design that reminds us a lot of an iPod. Shortly after the triumph of the iPod, Apple focused on creating a smartphone after the failure of the ROKR E1. Steve Jobs and other Apple engineers were convinced that they had to develop their own smartphone.
Fadell discovered that it was Steve Jobs himself who strongly encouraged the team to create an iPod with telephone functions instead of a whole new device. Indeed, the design of the iPod, with its click wheel, had become so iconic that Jobs thought Apple’s smartphone should have it too.
“Jobs had very clear views on things, until they weren’t so clear. He really pushed us to make the iPod Plus phone work. We worked for weeks and weeks to figure out how to make it work. input with the click wheel. We couldn’t get it, and after the whole team was convinced we couldn’t do it, he said, “Keep trying!” , we all said, ‘No, that won’t work'”.

The prototype you shared in pictures in reality it was not working. It was sent to them by a third-party manufacturer to show them what they were capable of building. Interestingly, it resembles the concepts we saw before the iPhone launched.
“It’s a prototype that a third-party manufacturer sent to me saying, ‘We’re capable. Look at this cool thing we did. I think you should choose us because we can help you with this concept of iPod Phone”. the number pad or the click wheel or the camera. It was great that people thought of that. It wasn’t so bad! It doesn’t work for many reasons, but it’s not a bad idea.”.
To finish the team convinced Jobs that the approach had to be different, ditching the iPod design and moving on to something completely new. Apple engineers and designers have completely redesigned the project, focus on large touch screenalmost no physical buttons and an operating system based on Mac OS X.

In his book Build, which you can now buy on Amazon, Tony Fadell reveals many secrets of his career, being Apple one of the most important companies he worked for. But after the California company, Fadell created Nest, which was later acquired by Google. Something that made him see firsthand the difference between the two companies.
