One of the most important features of operating systems, and one that few people appreciate, is the remote updates. This allows system designers to change the behavior of the various devices that use them without requiring users to take us to a workshop or store. This is also true for desktop systems, like Windows, which received a very important update in recent days. One of the fixed bugs, available for Windows 10 and Windows 11, was the one that allowed attacks when the device was connected to a public WiFi network.
This flaw, numbered CVE-2024-30078, would allow an attacker on the same network to cause a computer with this vulnerability to crash due to excessive CPU usage. For the attack you must be on the same WiFi networkhence the problem of observation on public networks, where many strangers can be connected at the same time.
This would allow an unauthenticated attacker on our computer system to send a malicious network packet that uses a Wi-Fi network adapter, which could enable remote execution of malicious code. And it could completely compromise the computer. Considering the danger of security breach, Redmond considered it seriousalthough in theory there have been no reported cases of computer attacks in which it was used.

To fix this security flaw, Microsoft released an update for its latest two versions of Windows, which fixes the bug. This update is dated June 11, and this is one of the last releases. In the event that we use one of these two systems and we do not use the computer exclusively on completely reliable WiFi networks, it is more than recommended to update. As always, it’s a good idea to keep the operating systems we use up to date, especially after major outage notices like this.
