Sudden change in schools and institutes in Catalonia. The government of this autonomous community has approved a new set of instructions through its Ministry of Education which bans the use of iPhones (and other mobile phones) by school and college students.
It does this thanks to the results published in a report, itself based on a series of debates that the Generalitat of Catalonia carried out with the educational community. For students, if they own an iPhone, it means not being able to use it under new, more restrictive rules.
In progress, turn off your iPhone
Let’s look at the details of these rules, which vary according to age and the sector studied:
- If the student is in early childhood or primary education, the restriction is total. The iPhone cannot be used under any circumstances.
- If the student is in ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education), the student cannot use the iPhone in class, at recess or in other common areas. The only exception will be a use that teachers indicate in their classes, for exclusively educational purposes.
- If the student is in Baccalaureate or Professional Training (FP), then the iPhone can only be used in the classroom for educational purposes as it is. Cell phone use will be permitted in common rest areas depending on the specific decisions of the center where you are studying.
There will be exceptions for using the iPhone in emergency situations or in specific activities
The new regulations specify that exceptions are envisaged for reasons of outings, school trips, “singular” activities where the mobile phone is essential or emergencies requiring its use. But beyond that, the iPhone is not searchable. For the Generalitat, the objective of these rules is “preserve the learning environment, contribute to the overall development of students and promote digital competence in a responsible and well-targeted manner.
This new standard will be applied from the start of the next course of study, in September 2024. Today, more than 53% of Catalan schools and institutes have similar standards respecting the use of an iPhone or other mobile device. class.
The consequences of the new regulations on Apple services
Reading the specific rules reveals that the iPhone must be turned off upon arrival at school and “stored in a safe place” (page 6), so some Apple services will be affected. The search operation will be interruptedparents who wish to check the location of their child will therefore have to rely on the last location recorded before arriving in class.
Parents will have to get used to Do not text or call your children during school hours, because they will only be able to respond to these messages or calls after leaving the center. In any case, as we mentioned before, emergency cases are taken into account. There will be no total isolation if immediate attention from parents or healthcare personnel is required.
