Cheap is expensive, and even more so when it comes to the cables that our most-used devices depend on. And yes, in some specific use cases Apple cables can seem extremely expensive, but choosing the cheapest possible has consequences.
This is what happened to NoisilyMarvelous, a Reddit user who tried to charge his iPhone 15 Pro Max using one of the cheapest USB-C cables he found. The result, as you can see on the cover, is not what you would like to see when you wake up.
The consequences of poor energy management
NoisilyMarvelous comments on how the phone was found in this condition after leaving it charging overnight. The plastic around the metal connector had melted and said connector is stuck inside the USB-C port of the iPhone.
To make matters worse, the iPhone was so hot that NoisilyMarvelous burned his finger when he picked it up. The user admits on Reddit to purchasing a cheap USB-C cable he found on Amazon, which may have led to a poor management of charging power.
In these conditions, there is no other choice than to take the phone to Apple, because its connector needs to be repaired and it is likely that its battery has been damaged. The bill, I fear, will not be cheap.
You don’t need an Apple cable to avoid this
I’m not going to reduce this bad news to the moral of “you should always buy Apple cables”, because that would take the situation to another extreme which would not be correct. You just need to make sure that The cable we use is an MFi certified cable
All Apple cables obviously have this certification, but cables from other brands like Belkin or those from Amazon itself also have it (but not of the same quality as Apple). If they don’t have this certificate, no matter how USB-C and universal they are, we shouldn’t consider buying them.
