ChatGPT has become one of my most used apps on my iPhone and Mac. An irreplaceable work, leisure and information tool. Apple knows this, and that's why it's partnered to integrate ChatGPT throughout its operating system. But you don't need Apple Intelligence to enjoy an exquisite union between iOS and ChatGPT. Each of us can benefit from “that extra” what their apps have if used on an Apple device.
And, despite the fact that Microsoft is one of its main shareholders, OpenAI has always shown a clear preference for the Cupertino company. For example, the Mac was the first operating system to receive its native application. And now, with the arrival of iOS 18.2, this integration reaches new levels that will completely change the way we interact with the Assistant.
ChatGPT on iPhone goes beyond opening an app
The ChatGPT application on iPhone not only takes advantage of the latest iOS features, but integrates seamlessly with exclusive features like Dynamic Island when we have active voice chat. This way we can talk to the assistant while using other applications. The closest thing to a conversation on the phone, but with our assistant.
We see another novelty that has been on the iPhone for a short time when searching for “ChatGPT” in Spotlight. It will offer us not only to open the application, but also a kind of shortcut to request ChatGPT or open a new chat. If you click on these buttons, we can make the request directly from an iOS interface. We will be able to see the progress of Dynamic Island and the response of the iOS 18 interface itself.
If you have an iPhone with an action button (iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro), you can also turn this button into a shortcut to ChatGPT. For example, I use voice chat a lot to ask questions or give shape to my ideas. If I go Settings > Action button > Shortcuts > ChatGPTyou can add what interests you most: a new cat.
The union of Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT with iOS 18.2
Although Apple Intelligence is currently available in English, any of us with a compatible iPhone and iOS 18.2 installed can try it. You just need to follow a few steps to activate it and experience some of its new features, like Genmoji or Image Playground. But one of the coolest features comes from ChatGPT, as it integrates with Siri and operating system tools in iOS 18.2.
For example, we can ask Siri anything and if it doesn't know, it will query the ChatGPT database. This makes it a really useful assistant, because, for example, we can ask it for recipe ideas, health questions… anything that comes to mind.
Also, in Notes Mail, ChatGPT integrates to compose texts based on a few small guidelines. For example, in Notes you can open the writing tools and ask me to write an article about the island of Lanzarote. In a few seconds, you will have written it.
Ultimately, this puts all the power ChatGPT already has into your app, but serving native Apple apps. So the combination is really wonderful. You save the input, output, copy it, paste it…
I would like to point out that currently, It's only available in English, but you can try it. We'll really see the change in April, when Apple Intelligence arrives in Spanish. But even if you don't have Apple Intelligence, ChatGPT already offers a fully immersive experience in the Apple ecosystem.
- Searches and queries via Spotlight and without opening the application
- Action button settings
- Voice chat integrated into Dynamic Island
And we've talked about all of this regarding the iPhone, but the integration on Mac is just as impressive. Once the application is installed, you can invoke a floating window by pressing Option+Space. With this window, you will have ChatGPT at your fingertips without interrupting your workflow. This feature is especially useful when you're working on documents or doing research and need quick help from the assistant.
Apple was part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of Christmas”
This total integration with Apple is no coincidence. The good relationship between the two companies made iOS 18.2 part of OpenAI's “12 Days Before Christmas”. a special Christmas event where the company presents daily news via live streams on YouTube.
The announcement of integration with iOS 18.2 came precisely on the 5th day of the event, and for more than ten minutes Its CEO, Sam Altman, showed us everything we can do with iOS 18.2 and ChatGPT. And even though we have to configure our iPhone especially for Apple Intelligence, I'm counting the days until April and I can enjoy it all in Spanish. In the meantime, what we can take advantage of is all the integration with the operating system that works today.
