The row of Nanoleaf smart lights is divided into two rows of the same length (10 m) with the same LEDs (125), which makes it easy to place on a Christmas tree or any other element where you want to decorate it (ramp, for example). The cables are 2.4 meters long to the first LED bulb so we have enough room to get the lights to the desired location from the outlet. It has a controller with a physical button to control the lights manually, although what we are going to do in 99% of cases is use our Nanoleaf app or the voice assistant that we use at home to control them . They are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, thanks to IP44 certification
Setting
For installation, simply plug in the lights and spread them throughout the desired area, which doesn’t take too much time. Then we have to take our smartphone and via the Nanoleaf application proceed with the configuration, very simple thanks to the fact that you just have to scan the QR code it’s in the instruction manual and in the lighting controller. From this step we will only have to follow the steps indicated by the Nanoleaf application in a very intuitive and clear way. Among these steps is to give it access to our WiFi network and add it to our Matter network. For the latter, we need to have the necessary infrastructure, which can range from a compatible HomeKit accessory center (HomePod 2nd generation or HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K) to other accessories that act as a Matter router, such as many lights from Nanoleaf itself.
Once this is done, we can download the scenes we want from the Nanoleaf application. The use of the native application is essential in this type of light devices, since it is the only one that will allow us to get the most out of the accessory. We can use static scenes, with a single color or multiple colors, or dynamic ones that move in a predefined way, or even to the rhythm of the music that is playing (the controller is responsible for “listening” and generating the rhythm ) . In the Nanoleaf app we have countless designs ready to download with different themes, many of which are Christmas, and all of which are completely free. If none of them convince us, which is very unlikely, we can create our own. We even have playlists available that include different scenes that will alternate over time. To use them in our lights we’ll need to download them, but we can always preview them to check how they look in our design first.
The application allows us to control switching on and off, create timers and control the rest of the lights of the brand, and if we want, even other brands that we have added to our home automation network. We can even export certain scenes as “environments” to the Home app to be able to control them, a very ingenious solution from Nanoleaf to partly resolve the major limitations of the Home application with decorative lights. Personally, I prefer to use the Nanoleaf app to change scenery, and exit the Home app to automate its operation, but that’s my personal setup and just a suggestion for you.
Because the Home application allows us to do very little in terms of operation: turn on, turn off, modify the brightness and change the color, but overall, nothing on the creation of multiple color scenes, let alone animated ones. The only strong point of Casa are the automations, where we can combine our decorative lights with the rest of the lights in the house so that they all turn on and off at the same time. Thanks to HomeKit compatibility, we can use Siri to control the lights, but again with the limitations of Home.
Functioning
The lights have more than enough color and brightness to provide us with a lively and colorful decoration perfect for the Christmas holidays or any other occasion. If you want something more discreet, you can always opt for warmer tones and reduce the brightness, so that it suits all tastes. Response to controls via the Nanoleaf app is fast, one of Matter’s advantages over other protocols such as Bluetooth, and the connection is very stable even over long distances as long as you have other Matter accessories that can serve as bridges to connection. automation center. I haven’t had any issues with the lights disconnecting or not responding since I installed them a week ago, so I’m more than happy with them. And best of all is the huge number of designs we already have created and ready to download from your app.
Editor’s opinion
The new Nanoleaf lights are designed for Christmas parties but they can really be used for any occasion in which we want to create a special atmosphere. With simple control and very fast response, these lights are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, they have great brightness and more than enough length and number of LEDs to decorate a large area or a medium sized Christmas tree (anything that can fit in a room). , it is therefore a more than recommended purchase.
