Installing Clario 1.5 on a Mac is quick and easy. You just need to download and install the program from the Clario website. After installation, you will be prompted to create a Clario account or sign in to an existing account.
The program seems to explain the features of the product including the 7 day trial. The program then guides you through the installation process, helping you configure all the key features.
As a first step, you can add your email address to the data breach feature to receive an alert if any of your website accounts suffer a data breach.
Second, you are asked if you want to enable the VPN. Thirdly, you can install browser extensions for Safari and Chrome to block pop-up ads and trackers, as well as report suspicious websites. Finally, you are asked if you want to install the Clario mobile app on your iOS/iPadOS or Android device. After installation, Clario drops you into the control panel with a warning that you are fully protected.
I like how Clario walks you through the setup process so you can evaluate the different options and figure out which ones you want to enable. This is a welcome change from many products that just toss you into their interface without helping you set up and use the Software properly.
With the on-screen dashboard, you can review all the features organized into three categories. The browsing category displays the status of the malicious website and ad blocking, as well as the VPN. Select Website and ad blocking to confirm it’s on and view any content that’s already been blocked.
Next, the Identity category monitors your online accounts for breaches, malicious apps trying to steal and compromise your personal data, and suspicious websites trying to hijack forms.
Exploring specific features will tell you if your email address has been compromised and if any malicious websites or apps have been discovered.
The Network category lets you view and control the VPN and whether third-party websites are blocked from tracking the sites you visit. The VPN will activate automatically if Clario detects that you are using an unprotected network, although you can activate it manually for better protection on any network.
Go back to the dashboard to get an overview of your security status. Here you can enable a quick virus scan, which is actually quite comprehensive. On my Mac, Clario has detected and quarantined the EICAR test file, which is used to verify the effectiveness of antivirus programs.
In a March 2021 review, AV-Test gave Clario top marks for protection and ease of use, but low marks for performance. A December 2020 test gave Clario top marks in all three categories.
As you go through the different features, Clario helps you through the process. Some links direct you to informative articles and advice on specific areas of security. You can also easily open a chat session with a Clario support representative if you have any questions or run into any issues.
The only downside I found was performance. When I checked and adjusted the various features, the program was sometimes slow and hampered the performance of the system. But with the software fully configured and running in the background, performance was good. Overall, Clario is an easy-to-use and effective security product worth installing on your Mac.
