It’s official, the first tropical cyclone of the season has arrived, which will bring rain to the northeast, east, southeast and even central Mexico. It’s about Tropical Storm Alberto. After spending a few days as a potential temporary cyclone over the Gulf of Mexico, the National Weather Service declared it a tropical storm forming.
Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to make landfall early Thursday morning. According to forecasts, the cyclone will cause torrential rain which could be accompanied by electric shocks and possibly hail, as reported by our colleagues from Xataka México. It is important to take precautions against storms and blizzards.
How to set alarms on your cell phone to warn you if it’s going to rain
The National Weather Service predicts:
- Torrential rain to: Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Hidalgo and Puebla
- Heavy rain to: Zacatecas, Querétaro, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche and Quintana Roo
- Very heavy rain in: Guanajuato, Tlaxcala and Yucatán
- Heavy rain and downpours in: Mexico City, State of Mexico and Morelos
It is important to take precautions, as in some areas there could also be a risk of flooding.

Using the Rain Alarm app

The rain alarm allows Set up a notification on your smartphone when a storm approaches. In addition, it also allows you to know the weather forecast. The application offers more functions and eliminates advertising if we pay a subscription, but we can set an alarm with the free version.
Once you have installed the app and indicated your location, try going to the settings menu and configuring the data to be expressed in Celsius and kilometers per hour, among other preferences.
Use the IFTTT app
IFTTT (If This Then That, or “If this, then that”) is a tool that, among other functions, allows us to configure alarms and notifications based on different parameters.
In this case, we will create an alarm so that the application warns us if it rains:
- We download the IFTTT application from the Google Play Store
- In “If this”, we click on the option Weather underground
- From the available options we select “The current state changes to” then we select “Rain”, checking that the location is correct
- Then in “So this” we select Notifications and we can personalize the message we receive
Once the process is complete, the alarm will have been created. Yes, this alarm will tell us if it has already started to rain, but when choosing the location we can select an area close to our frequent location to estimate that if it has already started to rain there it will rain soon also where we are. .
