A few days ago, we learned that Google is preparing an update to Android 12 with a focus on foldable terminals, something we already know is the future, albeit in the long term. Google seems to be developing one, the Pixel Fold.
It was speculated that Android 12.1, what we thought it would be called, would enter beta in December, but Google decided to push things forward.
Android 12L is the name of this new version, and it is already available for developers who want to test how this new firmware goes with their applications.
Android 12L is not for normal mobiles
The first thing to clarify is that Android 12L is not designed for normal smartphones, for them it’s Android 12.
Today’s version is aimed at large-screen devices, such as foldable smartphones like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Android tablets, and Chrome OS computers.
For example, the notification area has two columns, showing a lot more information at a time than on a normal mobile.
Most of the improvements in Android 12L will not be available on normal mobiles, despite which there will be trial versions for the Pixels.
Better multitasking

Of course, these terminals tend to favor multitasking, since their screens are much larger. As seen in the tweet of Nils Ahrensmeier This is one of the aspects that has improved, coming closer to the iPad.
Application bar
Another change is the presence of a fixed application bar, a dock similar to that of Windows or Mac OS which will remain fixed at the bottom. It is similar to the one that can be put on the side in the Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Compatibility mode
As there will be a lot of apps that won’t get optimized, in Google they have included a compatibility mode that opens apps like in any other smartphone.
An option like that of the Z Fold 3 would have been preferable to extend any application, but it would surely be more problematic.
When can it be used
Android 12L is now available in a first Developer Preview designed for what these versions are designed for, for developers to test their apps and fit them to those screen proportions. Android 12L emulator is available for them.
Of course, for normal mobiles we will have to wait until December, because Google itself has indirectly advanced. There we will have the first beta, there will be another in January and another in February and a few later, if there are no last minute changes, the stable version will arrive. These models will be compatible:
- Pixel 6 Pro
- Pixel 6
- Pixel 5a 5G
- Pixel 5
- Pixel 4a 5G
- Pixel 4a
- Pixel 4
The final version of Android 12L will be released in early 2022.
