Apple’s 16 series iPhones launched last month, but the rumor mill just keeps churning. We’re already getting plenty of leaks and tips about updates and new features coming to the next generation of iPhone in 2025 – or in this case, existing features coming to a wider range of handsets.
This fall, Apple introduced a new space-age battery adhesive to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus… but not to the 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The adhesive ‘peels’ when an electrical current is applied, making it easy to remove the batteries from the handsets when you want, but also means they are held securely in place when you don’t. (We explain the technology in a separate article.) This is obviously useful because the battery is one of the most likely to wear out and need to be replaced and easy removal helps simplify the repair.
Given how attractive this looks, it makes sense that Apple would want to offer it on as many phones as possible, and especially on high-end models. And of course, leaker Majin Bu claimed yesterday, based on “information I was able to obtain”, that the entire iPhone 17 range would benefit from the new adhesive technology.
It might seem strange that Apple would limit a new feature to cheaper versions of the iPhone 16, when it very clearly wants to sell customers on the Pro models. But it’s not entirely unprecedented for new features that the company considers experimental. The budget 10th generation iPad came with a landscape-oriented FaceTime camera years before its more expensive siblings, but while we now consider that a definite improvement, Apple may not have been sure it would be received positively at the time. Likewise, there are rumors that next spring’s new low-cost iPhone SE will gain the benefits of an internal 5G modem before any other iPhone. This seems like an odd strategy, but it minimizes the risk of a high-end, high-priced model encountering unexpected problems.
